Just write things in a particular order and you are good to go. Put Repeating things in functions, things which are needed by others make it public and protected otherwise, make it private. make as less steps as you can but it should be not hard for your computer. Now you are a programmer.

Different languages have different features and pros and cons, making some languages more suitable than others in some areas. In one project can be used many languages in different parts of the game ecosystem: * for the engine can be used more performance efficient language - c++, c#; * for logic can be used easy-to-learn scriptable languages - lua, python, javascript; * for build engineering\devops can be used also scriptable languages, but a bit different - python, ruby, bash, perl, groovy; * in online games, for backends lots of languages can be used - javascript, python, golang, java, etc;

Platform-specific languages (e.g., Objective-C, Swift) are used in mobile development, and web-based games rely on JavaScript and HTML5. Concurrency-supporting languages (e.g., Rust, Go) are crucial for efficient multi-core utilization. The development community and ecosystem significantly impact language suitability. Developers often use a combination of languages for different aspects of game development.

This question can be answered by looking at what are the most popular game engines out there. While C++ remains the top contender here, it is also worth noting that Unity Game Engine, which uses C#, has a huge market share and thereby C# is also widely used. When it comes to C++ a lot of developers who even create their own custom engines prefer working in C++ and on the other hand Unreal Engine uses C++. Thereby if you look at the overall game development landscape, C++ and C# are widely used. You also have other languages such as Java, Python (Pygame subset) that can be used to make games but C++ and C# by far remain the top languages used for game programming.

If we speak about C++ in Unreal Engine I would say that it's kind of a different dialect at all. C++ in Unreal has its standard library and lots of constraints, which is not clear at first sight. So, if you wish to learn C++, it's better to learn standard C++, and try to figure out why it is different from Unreal's version. And, mostly, the experience in working with C++ in Unreal is not interchangeable with C++ in other software development, because of very specific approaches in game development at all.

Knowing both C# and C++ is great, but one thing I’ve realized is that being able to integrate the two is also important! Ex: right now we are implementing a pitch tracking algorithm in our Unity game. There are tons of repositories that do it really well in C++, but not so for C#! Knowing when to integrate C++ code into our game when needed will be important for us going forward.

A case for learning one language deeply first: When you're starting out and only engaging with the basics, many languages are more or less the same. Sure, C++ and Unreal might be more performant than C#, but how many FPS is there to squeeze out of your cube-based platforming game? In my opinion, the benefit of broadening your horizons through additional languages really starts to manifest when you're either limited by the conventions of your first language/dev context, or when you're at least using and leveraging a significant breadth of the solutions afforded to you by your language. A carpenter will know if an expensive hammer is worth its price. To a DIY'er, they're all just hitty-sitcks.

Learning multiple programming languages offers versatility and problem-solving skills, enhancing adaptability across projects. It broadens understanding but may lead to surface-level knowledge. While boosting employability, it comes with drawbacks such as longer learning curves and potential confusion. Striking a balance by mastering a core set of languages while staying open to new ones can provide a well-rounded skill set.

I would say that knowing a lot of programming languages is basically just knowing the difference in syntax. For example, if you are really good at Python and C++ you’d see that there’s a huge difference in syntax, especially with the usage(or lack) of brackets but the core logic more or less remains the same. So a foundational knowledge of programming is required. Languages can differ based on the comfort level of the programmer. I say this from my own experience developing games using Python, Java, C++ and C#. Just the syntax changes.

I believe it’s critical for a developer to learn multiple languages. However, I recommend mastering one language before moving to the next. For now C++ is the best language for a game developer to learn. Although, Rust has good potential to replace C++.

I would say that it's not your decision to learn or not some language. It's mostly a necessity. You have to read code in different languages to be more productive at work. You have to fix code in a language, that you don't know at all. You have to be able to extend code in a language, which you didn't meet before. So, be open-minded to learning new languages and new technologies. Of course, the more deeply you know a language than it's better, but it's really hard to be a master.

One of the best way to improve your proficiency in programming is to simply practice. Make projects, read documentation, watch tutorials, dedicate time to learn, look at other people’s source codes. All you need to do is find out ways through which you can make your code better and also realising that you don’t know everything and you don’t need to. You just need to approach your problems objectively and find solutions for them. Take baby steps for learning, everything else will fall in place in the long term once you have enough experience in this field.

Look at demos. A surprisingly effective resource is to look at demo projects that frequently accompany major game systems available in marketplaces and asset store. After you've gotten to a certain level of skill, the hardest part becomes how to integrate your code into a larger development context than simply making the code work at all. These demo projects have the benefit of usually being small enough to appreciate in their entirety, and written in a way that it's supposed to be easier for newer programmers/developers to engage with. The only risk/challenge is for more complex systems that have external assemblies that obfuscate major functionalities, which can make it hard to grasp insights when big chunks are missing.

Ask to review your code. You will understand how is readable and understandable your code, you will see another point of view on the same problem, and you will know different techniques and possible implementations of the same piece of code. Code review practices alongside pair programming are a very efficient way to learn languages.

It's about sufficiency. It's important to distinguish the breadth of what a "game development career" can include in 2024. If you're independent, working on personal projects, or joining a small team, proficiency is usually a matter of BREADTH. When you have responsibility over a large swath of the development, sufficiency looks like meaningfully engaging with essential engine systems and support the basic logic for any given game. If you're looking to join a studio, joining a large team, or have a narrow scope of responsibility, it's all about DEPTH. Sufficiency on a larger team looks like good fundamentals and contextual familiarity. They're more concerned about coding standards, literacy, optimizing for performance, etc.

Do not forget that people do games and programming language is just a tool. So, it's better to find the best people to work with and the best game to create, everything else can be learned.
