How does a product manager's performance impact product success?

Vision is the end place where one aims to be and strategy is the way in which they intend to reach there. Now, if the place itself is wrong i.e if the customer doesn’t want the product as of now, no matter how good you strategise, the adoption won’t be that good. (Market Research backed by data) If there is a demand or need and your vision statement is correct but you either take too long to complete the product or you miss out of essential details, still the product development is a failure. (Effective roadmapping, product prioritisation) Hence these responsibilities lies with the PM and their performance is directly related to product development.

Based on my experience, I have some valuable tips for product managers to achieve success. Firstly, it is crucial for a product manager to have a deep understanding of the target market, customer needs, and competitive landscape. This can be achieved through market research, collecting customer feedback, and staying updated with industry trends. By effectively understanding the market, product managers can make informed decisions, identify opportunities, and develop products that truly resonate with customers, ultimately leading to greater success. Additionally, product managers should take responsibility for creating and managing the product roadmap. This roadmap should outline the product's future direction, features, and enhancements.

One of the core skills of a product manager is to define and communicate a clear and compelling product vision and strategy. In my experience, one of the most important skills is to communicate how each team member’s work impacts the bigger picture and celebrate small victories to maintain motivation and emphasize the value of their contributions to the overall vision. This keeps morale high and fosters a sense of shared achievement.

Product manager's vision having the OKR's i.e. Objective and Key Results for the particular product define it's success. Setting the objective enables the vision of the product and using its success metrics allows you to find the key results. At every stage a product manager has to strategically manage the situation.
