How does DCS enable remote monitoring and control of industrial processes?

A distributed control system (DCS) is an industrial control system that consists of field sensors, transducers, controllers, servers, and operator workstations for local/remote control and monitoring of the process plant. DCS enables remote monitoring and control by using communication networks such as Ethernet, wireless, or satellite to connect the field devices and controllers with the central control room or other remote locations.This way, the operators and engineers can access real-time data, historical trends, alarms, and other key information from their devices, and perform operations and engineering functions securely and efficiently. DCS also provides cybersecurity features to protect the system.

In my 20+ years of working around and with various DCS brands, my favorite has to be Emerson Delta V DCS. It has many advantages but what I like the most is how user-friendly it is from a programming - configuration, and commissioning point of view.

DCS systems were based on Proprietary operating systems, but advances in Windows Operating System created a demand that made majority of DCS vendors to migrate to Windows Platforms. Using Windows Remote Desktop service most of the DCS software can be operated remotely. There are other platforms using HTML graphics that can also be achieved.

Most of the modern DCS/PCS are based on Windows based platforms and commercial off the shelf hardware (COTS). Windows as we know has built in remote desktop capabilities. These capabilities are leveraged to enable remote operation of the DCS/PCS workstation ever since it was made available. However, in modern times, there are few things that need to be taken care of to avoid the pitfalls: cybersecurity, user management, access control and privileges, design of remote monitoring HMI screens, View-only configurations. Strong administrative policies and procedures need to be put in place to ensure safe and secure remote monitoring to avoid hacks and attacks.

DCS facilitates remote monitoring by integrating advanced communication technologies. Through a centralized interface, operators can access real-time data from sensors distributed throughout the industrial plant. This enables them to track variables such as temperature, pressure, and production rates remotely.

It is important to note that certain operations should be locked to be able to be performed only from specific locations in the plant instead of being performed remotely. This helps in minimizing or even eliminating incidents related to personnel safety.

My experience with DeltaV was easy to enable remote access using Emerson detailed KBA and Books Online (built-in DCS help) for remote/thin clients but don't forget buying appropriate licenses: - DCS Remote Client License - Windows Remote Access License if any Also note, License cost changes with number of remote users.

The other things that need to be considered for remote access using the internet is cybersecurity policies. The cybersecurity policy can make the DCS hardware & software more secure. It requires all of the stakeholders such as the IT, operation and maintenance team to design & implement the cybersecurity policies and network configuration to prevent intruders from entering the system and sabotaging the process plant.

1. DEcentralized Control System. It means no one center of decisions. The system is established in a common network between engineering stations. Very reliable! 2. Because of the localization of control functions in each place - less cost for installation and raised reliability. 3. Detectors and sensors get data and send it to local io-modules. So actuators which connected to these local io work out faster in this case 4. About config tools. In DCS engineer has tools for oversee the control logic, graphics, database and security access. Shortly, solutions with DCS are more adaptable and capable of scaling compared to conventional centralized CSs. So industries can change requirements and keep high levels of efficiency and reliability.

The benefits of DCS are manifold. Firstly, it enhances operational efficiency by providing a holistic view of industrial processes, allowing for timely decision-making. Secondly, DCS contributes to improved safety by enabling remote monitoring and control, reducing the exposure of personnel to hazardous environments. DCSs play a crucial role in manufacturing plants to power generation facilities. Reliability and safety are essential to ensuring smooth operations. Over the years, DCSs have become more interconnected with networked technologies such as the Industrial IIoT, enabling remote monitoring, improving efficiency, and reducing costs. However, this has made DCSs more vulnerable to cyber threats that can cause equipment damage, process failures, or even human injury if a DCS is compromised. Cybersecurity monitoring of DCSs is essential and should include measures such as vulnerability assessments, threat analysis, intrusion detection, IR planning as well as regular security audits and testing to ensure the system remains secure and up-to-date.

No doubt, remote monitoring is a blessing especially for managers, directors sitting at offices checking Production, Operational parameters etc. but it comes at a great cybersecurity risk which although can be minimized but can never be eliminated 100%. Decide what is needee: - View only? or Controlling? - Production/Operation Data? - How many users? - Access to Trends/Alarms? DCS Engineer can use Firewall with a network switch separated from DCS Access Control Network, multiplayer access to DCS Server/Workstation, assigning appropriate licenses, hardening devices, creating users with limited privileges and complex passwords, doing required Windows configurations following OEM recommendations and Industrial Best practices/ SOPs.

Remote monitoring depends on many factors. In the olden days, we used mobile phone and satellite signals for those hard to reach areas like well heads and pipelines. But for those areas that are readily accessible, fiber-optic and ethernet cables will do. Ethernet radio can also be used temporarily or as backup. Nowadays, all DCS data can now be accessed through internet. An on-call System and Control expert can diagnose and troubleshoot DCS that is installed on the other side of the planet.

Any remote monitoring of plant industrial control systems (DCS / PLC) creates a level of security vulnerability. Air Gapping is the safest option for critical process applications. Using firewall protected DMZ's with server mirroring (read only protocols) can allow for remote monitoring from business LANs, but it's expensive and requires full-time management.
