How does color affect the perceived size of a room?

It is common practice that lighter or brighter colours are used in smaller spaces as they reflect more light and so they make the space feel more spacious, more open. This doesn't mean that darker colours should only be used in large spaces. Using darker or accent colours in smaller spaces, will help giving a charachter to that space, hightlight a feature, create depth, focus or shape a cozy corner.

Certain colors can either widen or tighten the room in terms of size and make cozy, dramatic or calm in terms of how the space feels. they might also command our mood, Vaastu can help one understand the different dynamic of colors and their rightful usage in different parts of a house.

When my Clients want a calm or bold room I make sure we paint everything in one color to include ceiling, doors and trim. To make a small room or space feel bigger, paint the area in a shade of white and it must include painting ceiling, doors and trim in that same. To visually reduce the height of a ceiling when 10' or more, paint the ceiling in a darker color and continue that dark color down the wall a minimum of 10" (increase as ceiling height increases) this is a simple trick to visual lower the room height Where we paint color in a room is very important.

In my experience, I have understood that colors affect the whole feel of a room. I personally prefer light colors such as whites, pale pastels, or soft neutrals because they make the room feel cleaner, more spacious, and open since these colors reflect light and create a sense of comfort. Additionally, using monochromatic color schemes, where the walls, furniture, and accents are in similar tones creates a comfortable and intimate atmosphere. On the other hand, contrasting colors can visually divide a space and make it feel smaller.

While colour temperature sets the overall tone of space, understanding colour undertones is equally important. These subtle hues that lie beneath the primary colour can greatly influence the perceived temperature and mood of the room. Understanding colour undertones can be incredibly helpful when creating a space that is both airy and warm. By selecting colour with the right undertone, we can achieve a balance between the desired spaciousness and cozy, welcoming atmosphere.

Using the same colour with different tones across a space creates a sense of continuity; hence a perception of depth, openness, and more space. For example, in a modern apartment with an open plan design, a monochrome ivory-white colour scheme in similar or different tints can spread across the sitting room, dining room and kitchen space even into the corridor space leading to the bedrooms. This implementation can give the perception of a larger space as the monochrome theme unifies more surface area than if it were a different colour for each space.
