1 What is universal design?

Universal design is a term that originated from architecture and engineering, where it refers to the creation of products and environments that are usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. The idea is to consider the diversity of human needs and abilities from the start, rather than adding accommodations later. For example, a building with ramps, elevators, and automatic doors is universally designed, as it can be accessed by people with or without mobility impairments.

Unfortunately, in almost all school I've worked in, the planning lessons was not aimed for inclusion nor differentiation properly. Most schools or Head of departments apply what they think is best ignoring the fact that lesson planning and designing varies depending on classes and students and age groups.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a research-based approach to learning that provides multiple means of representation, engagement, and action and expression for learners of varying backgrounds and abilities. This includes providing different ways to access and comprehend content, such as through text, audio, video, images, graphics, symbols, or animations; offering choices, challenges, relevance, feedback, and collaboration to interact with and be motivated by the content; and allowing for different levels of complexity, accuracy, and creativity to demonstrate and communicate learning. UDL also acknowledges and addresses the affective factors that influence learning such as interests, goals, values, emotions, and beliefs.

4 What are the benefits of universal design for learning?

Universal design for learning has many advantages for both learners and educators, such as promoting equity and inclusion , enhancing engagement and motivation, fostering differentiation and personalization, supporting metacognition and self-regulation, and improving learning outcomes and retention. It does this by reducing barriers and providing opportunities for all learners to succeed, allowing them to choose what, how, and why they learn, providing them with options and flexibility to customize their learning according to their needs, preferences, and strengths, encouraging them to reflect on their learning process, monitor their progress, adjust their strategies and goals, and activating multiple pathways and networks in the brain.

Universal design for learning is not a one-size-fits-all solution, nor is it a quick fix. It requires a shift in mindset, practice, and culture, and poses some challenges for educators. Implementing UDL necessitates time and resources for planning, implementation, and evaluation; as well as access to diverse and flexible materials and tools. Furthermore, collaboration and communication among educators, learners, families, and communities is necessary to share and learn from best practices and experiences. Additionally, ongoing professional development is needed to stay up to date with the latest research, technology, and innovation in UDL; as well as reflect on and improve one's practice. Finally, flexibility and responsiveness to the changing needs, interests, and abilities of learners; as well as the dynamic nature of learning must also be taken into account.

6 How can you start using universal design for learning?

Universal design for learning is not a rigid or prescriptive model, but rather a flexible and adaptable framework that can be applied to any context, content, or grade level. To start using universal design for learning in your teaching, it’s important to learn more about the principles, guidelines, and checkpoints and how they align with your curriculum standards and goals. Assess your current practice and identify the strengths and areas of improvement in terms of providing multiple and flexible means of representation, engagement, and action and expression. Then, choose one aspect or element of your practice that you want to enhance or modify with universal design for learning. Plan how you will implement universal design for learning, using the UDL guidelines and checkpoints as a reference while considering the variability and diversity of your learners. Finally, implement your plan and observe how your learners respond and perform while collecting feedback and data . Evaluate your plan afterwards to reflect on what worked well, what didn't work well, and what can be improved or changed for the next time.

To apply Universal Design for Learning, I connect my students' needs with their learning styles. For instance, teaching Literacy to students with IEPs and ELLs led me to discover common strategies. Using vocabulary flashcards worked for both groups. When most students favored auditory learning, I used the call-and-response method. I encourage you to connect your students' needs and learning styles, sparking creativity to bridge gaps. It's a challenge, but it cultivates a vibrant learning community where students eagerly engage with each other and the teacher.
