Why your company should not be a family but a Community!

Patricia Universe is no longer a family, we are now a community.
Here is why.
The idea of a company being a family represents the kind of relationship that the founder/Management/company wants to foster within the organization,…
…A lifetime relationship with a sense of belonging.
But, I have come to notice that using the term family makes room for misunderstandings, Entitlements, and overall conflict.
You can't quit on your family and in the same light, parents can’t fire their children. Try to imagine disowning your child for poor performance:?“We’re sorry Chika, but your mom and I have decided you’re just not a good fit. Your table-setting effort has been deteriorating for the past 6 months, and your obsession with Fried Potato isn’t adding any value. We’re going to have to let you go. But don’t take it the wrong way; it’s just family.”?It’s funny, right?
However, it is not unusual for people to leave their jobs and definitely not unheard of for underperformers within an organization let go…
Can you really fire FAMILY????
This right here is the problem,
However, another way to look at it is as a community
A community must set and use performance standards.
Aim to achieve a higher purpose other than caring and loving each other this way, we don’t end up with unhealthy attitudes.
I’d rather we see ourselves as a team and not a family, a sports team, a professional sports team that has a specific mission (to win games and championships), with members coming together to accomplish that mission.

A better vision for a workplace is a community — a place where people bond around shared values, feel valued as human beings, and have a voice in decisions that affect them.
A community with clear goals and clear obstacles — This helps achieve focus, alignment, and motivation.
A community with clear roles and expectations. Team members know what they’re expected to do and how they contribute to the goal.
A community built on?Diversity?— Diverse people contribute in valuable ways!
A community built on?Unique Culture?— Culture is everything, it is the unspoken glue of every organization, you can’t see it but it is necessary for us to build a strong one that will carry us on.
A community built on Trust, Clear Communication, Mutual Respect, and Contribution to the community!
I’d end with this, Good teams and companies function well because their members know they can rely on one another, not necessarily because they’re related by blood.
Stay inspired,
Stay excited,
Stay Doing the most.

Systems Thinking Precedes Sustainable Success
7 个月Community bound by shared values … this is probably the most critical aspect of organisational development and leadership. A community is a system of interrelated relationships that inherently implies dependency. Therefore, it is the collective responsibility of people who operate in a single system of values or way of work that gives effect to forward momentum. It effectively means, that no one person has agency over the next person because of family orientation but each person is bound by the system that dictates the values that every single person must be subjected to … there are no royal game in communities only equally yoked members …
