How do you use style frames to communicate motion and transitions?

Let's not forget the usage of Animatics here! In my workflow, style frames and animatics are both crucial for defining motion and transitions in animation projects. While style frames provide a visual reference for key moments, animatics are indispensable for understanding the timing and flow of the animation. In the end we want the person on the other understand what we are envisioning in our mind.

Style frames need to walk the designer & Client on the same path. Usually, clients are used to visualizing the final design, especially motion design. For Example- when someone reads a novel and after that he/she watches a movie inspired by the story. But he/she doesn't feel so connected with the movie. But if the novel contains some illustrations that are also used in the movie, one can feel more connected. Style frames are a visual representation of how the final animation will look. Style frames help the client to be connected with the motion designer's thinking map.

- Visual Direction: Style frames establish the visual direction and aesthetics of the project, serving as a reference for the overall look and feel. - Client Communication: They facilitate client communication by providing a tangible representation of the intended design, enabling stakeholders to visualize the final product and provide feedback. - Storyboarding: Style frames help in storyboarding by illustrating key scenes, transitions, and design elements, aiding in the pre-visualization process. - Consistency: They ensure consistency throughout the project by establishing design standards for colors, typography, composition, and visual motifs.

It might sound obvious, but design the style frames in the software you're planning to animate in. (for me it's mostly AE) This way you have access to all those tools and effects that aren't available in other programs. (A drop shadow in photoshop looks different to illustrator and different again in after effects.) This means that your client will see what the frames will actually look like - and it makes your life easier when it comes to the animation stage.
