1 Choose relevant stories

For example, if you are networking with potential clients, you might share stories that show how you solved problems, delivered results, or exceeded expectations for your previous or current clients. If you are interviewing for a job, you might share stories that show how you learned new skills, overcame obstacles, or contributed to your team's success. Think of stories that are specific, memorable, and relevant to the situation.

Yes, you have a lot of stories to tell to show your value. NO, you cannot possibly tell them all. And never use "what" to make your point. Use "why." Please tell us why you do what you do: 1) today, the sum total of your past experiences and skills that make you valuable today and 2) with your bright outlook and future orientation as you add to those skills as you progress. Use rich verbs and don't be shy telling us what makes you tick. But don't be verbose or self-aggrandizing or they flee (physically or mentally). It's a finetuning job, well worth frequent practice to perfect.

I have metaphors for everything I do, most are funny, to show my "why" I do what I do. It's all about telling the stories people can relate to, and if a metaphor does that, even better. Chances are the metaphor will be so memorable, they will think of me next time.

Start with a hook, for sure. Also - a lot of the story is told with a tone of voice, facial expressions and body language! Don’t underestimate the value of the story delivery.

If you deliver in a monotone, it won't resonate like it would if you deliver it in a way that shows your excitement and enthusiasm so a big part of a story is how you tell it. I'm also a BIG believer in practicing your story because it could look one way on paper but when you deliver it, it could come across completely different.

I believe it's all in the way you deliver the story that will captivate your audience and capture their attention. As a kid we used to practice telling asinine stories that had nothing to do with anything. Little did I realize that making up a story about a cow, driving a car, through the sky could be so amazing! When you are practiced at bringing a story to life, you will captivate your audience so they are engaged, entertained, and enlivened by what you are saying. This captures their attention for what you are about to say. If you find you are "losing" your audience, use a pattern interrupt. My favorite is the teacher from Ferris Bueller..."Bueller, Bueller, Bueller"...works every time. Get's everyone laughing. Have fun with it!
