How do you use storytelling to connect with candidates?

In my experience, Storytelling was not just simple storytelling, I've used it as an effective management tool to understand the EQ(emotional quotient) of the candidates, to understand them better, and whether or not they will be able to create a harmonious environment with coworkers.

By telling stories about their employees, products, or successes, companies can create an emotional connection with candidates and inspire them to want to be a part of the organization. Storytelling can also help candidates envision themselves as a part of the company and understand how they can contribute to its success.

An example of best storytelling is, that it should be something that is in addition to your skill set, it should never be a replacement for the treasures you're holding as a candidate. You can bring your stories to the table but present them like garnishing to the dish but not as an entire dish of garnishing.

Stories should be authentic, engaging, and relevant to the candidate's career aspirations and goals. They should highlight the company's unique strengths and differentiators and demonstrate its commitment to creating a positive and inclusive workplace. To choose the right stories, companies can conduct market research and gather feedback from employees and candidates to identify the most compelling and impactful stories. By selecting the right stories, companies can create a strong emotional connection with candidates and differentiate themselves from competitors in a crowded recruitment landscape.

It's always important to understand who you are talking to in determining which story you are going to share. Take the time to research and understand the stories with the most relevance. Use stories that are relevant to the position or industry and those that be relatable on a personal level.

Every story has a soul, if you're a good narrator, you'll capture the essence of your story, or else, you'll embarrass yourself in front of the team of interviewers.

Context is essential, you can't sing a funeral song at a wedding, and vice versa, you should tune yourself before jumping into storytelling.

In my experience, I've come across several bluff masters, and the only thing we use to differentiate a genuine from a bluff is by checking the facts. The candidate believes that the interviewer doesn't read his/her background before calling him/her for the interview. But in reality, we finish our background check before a face-to-face meet-up, so ALWAYS stick to your roots & be authentic.

A good chef takes feedback from his diners..! Likewise, when you're cooking up your story, make sure you collect feedback. It will enhance mutual engagement & builds the first block of trust.
