One aspect of sound and music often overlooked is the fact that sound moves and bounces around a space, some of the vibrations are absorbed by the audience. The energy is transferred into heat so the sound can literally create warmth to a space. It interacts with the surfaces and taps into our deepest instincts of survival etc. good music and sound design takes these elements into consideration to make immersive experiences whilst tapping into our emotions invisibly

When cued, placed, selected correctly, sound along with lighting can create not only the timing but more importantly the breath and rhythm of the play, installation and/or exhibit.

One thing I've found important in enhancing sound effects such as thunder, as a lighting designer, is understanding time delays and echoes and speed of light in real life. To understand the sequence of events and creating the visual to match the sound for the audience. As important is understanding the undertones of sounds that reverb after the initial sound, in order to create realistic sound effects. Also, if you are creating sound effects, with lighting cues, be sure to have good clear communication with the lighting designer to coordinate the timing together.

If you have the luxury of a set model, somewhat of a lost art these days, sit with the model and experiment with your sound selections. It's amazing how it will help the piece and the audio direction you want to take. Amazingly, it will confirm and dictate your speaker placement. Visualize in 3D the audio of your play, musical, installation or exhibit.
