1 What is a RACI matrix?

A RACI matrix is a table that maps out the roles and responsibilities of different people or groups involved in a project or process. RACI stands for Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed. These are the four types of participation that each stakeholder can have for each task or deliverable. Responsible means the person or group who does the work or performs the action. Accountable means the person or group who has the authority to approve or reject the work or action. Consulted means the person or group who provides input or feedback on the work or action. Informed means the person or group who needs to be notified or updated on the work or action. A RACI matrix can help you define and communicate who does what, who makes decisions, who needs to be consulted, and who needs to be informed.

2 How to create a RACI matrix?

Creating a RACI matrix requires that you identify the project scope, objectives, and deliverables; list the stakeholders, such as team members, sponsors, customers, vendors, etc.; and list the tasks or activities that need to be done. You must assign a RACI code (R, A, C, or I) to each stakeholder for each task or activity. You can use a spreadsheet or a template to create the matrix and ensure that each task has at least one R and one A. Furthermore, you should review and validate the matrix with the stakeholders to make sure everyone agrees and understands their roles and responsibilities. Resolving any issues or disagreements before proceeding with the project or process is essential.

For RACI Matrix, we have to first identify our stakeholders and who's gonna do what needs to be clarified via roles and responsibilities. On the basis of that we have to then decide for each activity which takes place during risk management as a whole, who would be doing what and who would be accountable, responsible, informed or consulted for all those tasks/activities.

The way we use it in our work is to integrate it as a part of checklist for Service Integration. So in order to have a project released to production, project team and support team must agree for the transition. This include having the knowledge transfer and also to have a complete RACI matrix so all can see clearly which process belongs to wo and who will run it. This also include infra team (i.e. run backup/restore), security/user admin (i.e. request new access, etc), and other related team that may interact with the solution.
