How do you use perennials, native plants, and self-seeding plants to reduce replanting?

Native plants are just plants that have originated within a particular country. They may or may not be adapted to the specific conditions and pests in your garden. Think about it: do all native plants have the same characteristics? Do they all love the same soils? The same levels of shade? Do they all have tolerances to the same pests and diseases? Of course not! Besides, urban conditions have drastically changed compared to what the land used to be hundreds/thousands/millions of years ago. They evolved within particular contexts and ecological communities which are different to our modern landscape conditions and ecosystems. For example, in Australian urban landscapes we see that possums have an advantage whereas numbats do not.

Using perennials, native plants, and self-seeding species can significantly reduce the need for replanting in your landscape. Perennials return each year, cutting down on the need to replant annually. Native plants are well-adapted to local conditions, making them more resilient and easier to care for. Self-seeding plants naturally disperse their seeds, allowing new growth without manual effort. This combination of plants creates a low-maintenance, sustainable landscape that continues to flourish with minimal intervention.

With the recent zone change map we now have more variety than ever that will reseed into our landscape. I choose reseeding varieties and allow those to seed where they will and then make adjustments when the plant(s) are still young to move. A few ways to encourage success and reduced replanting: Seed hardy annuals/ Biennials in the fall that way they will have a head start on those planted in the spring. Leave the stems of self-seeding plants this not only encourages reseeding it also provides a habitat for wildlife. Learn the Identification of seeds they often look very different when they only have their first or second set of leaves. Stop deadheading in early fall this allows the plant time to form those seeds and disperse them.

These plants are often bigger so you use less for a more dramatic impact. However, plants offer so much more to enrich us. Preservation is a pragmatic way of preserving rare, historical, and endangered plants. This is an important factor to consider when using these living records that can only be preserved by enjoying them, saving the seed, sharing, and encouraging reseeding and sharing. Many native plants are the predecessors to our modern medicines however we are still learning from their compounds. These plants provide microclimates and nesting for aerofauna: bees and wasps, butterflies, birds, mosquitoes, bats, damselflies, and moths. Finally, more permanent and recurring plants of your scenery deaden noises and add more privacy.

Do your specific scientific research on your region and microclimates with plant growth. Keep an open mind that aspect and growing conditions often are contributing factors if something becomes invasive versus if it nicely plays well with others in the landscape also if you notice something becoming invasive/noxious report it to your local extension office to help others limit its spread be a citizen scientist. Practice good sanitation, don't compost invasive self-seeders burn, bury deep, or throw in the trash. Leave soil undisturbed this limits weeds and also re-seeders Plant so you have a lush interweaving foil of groundcovers witch suppress re-seeders it also will reduce watering, add habitat, and increase interest in landscaping

Self seeding plants can be tricky to cultivate in the landscape. How do you facilitate them without facilitating weeds? Usually, weeds will outcompete them unless you invest heavily in hand weeding or natural weed killers (fire, steam, etc.) or go with the less expensive option of spraying glyohosate every couple of weeks. This is a project for the die-hard plant lovers who understand it won't be easy, but they're willing to give it a crack (I count myself among these types of people). It's not an aesthetic for designers who like neat and tidy gardens and straight lines.

Who is to say what a "native" is? Consider historical records are limited and climates are constantly evolving and changing. With global warming, we can use natives as a starting point for a more sustainable green space, however, we should consider all the data. If a cultivated variety brings in more aurofauna or other insects then I recommend that. If a native has more flower power then I say grow that. If a nativar is more hardy to your zone I say plant that. Plants have been breeding with each other long before our existence not caring about our labels. My point we lose when we limit ourselves to the ego of sides and pick team native versus team cultivars, it's both have their lessons to teach us in the nuances of nature

Like beams and columns define the structure of a building, plants define the structure of a landscape. I prefer using perennial and native plants with a shelf life of more than 5 years to define the structure of the landscape thereby drastically reducing the need to replant. For the remaining 15-20 percent, I opt for self seeding plants to add seasonal variations and leverage on the ephemeral character of plants.
