How do you use open-ended tasks to foster mathematical reasoning skills?

Open-ended tasks have so many benefits but one of the standouts is that it encourages students to take more risks with their learning by moving away from the one question one answer idea that is rarely the norm in true mathematics — or even life for that matter.

Open-ended tasks helps student think out of the box, without the fear of failing and apply what they learn. This way their knowledge and confidence for the subject increases. For teachers, Open-ended tasks open the endless possibilities a child can think into. I can help them understand better about the child's progress, learnings and understanding. It can bring out shortcomings and help them work on it

Open-ended tasks allow for multiple entry points, including the use of different strategies and representations. This enables students to approach tasks in different ways based on their prior knowledge.

A good open-ended task: - builds in differentiation by allowing for multiple strategies and representations thereby allowing all students to work at their level of thinking - may have more than one solution or a variety of possible solution paths - requires some degree of cognitive effort (more than just remembering a fact or reproducing a skill) - provides opportunities for students to represent their mathematical ideas using models and written language - provides opportunities for students to justify their reasoning and evaluate the reasoning of others - has clear, concise directions

It is very essential to state the objectives of the study and also be able to offer a reflection real-life situations where there may not be clear-cut solutions. Also in line with this, tasks that promote collaboration and communication contribute to a more interactive and dynamic learning environment.

Many textbook questions can be turned into open-ended tasks by working backwards using the following steps: a) identify a topic, b) think of a closed question and write down the answer, c) write a question that includes or addresses the answer. For example, if the topic is subtraction and the answer is 24 a possible task could be: "The difference between two numbers is 24. The numbers are both odd and less than 40. What might the two numbers be?" Another strategy is to adapt a standard question. For example, a standard 2nd grade question such as "What number has 1 hundred, 1 ten and 2 ones?" can be adapted to become an open-ended task such as "Jack made a number using 4 base ten blocks. What might the number be?"

Open ended questions helps students to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Students think mathematically and use their knowledge to express the answer. Helps to improve their confidence to express their ideas and opinions. Open-ended questions use higher levels of Bloom's taxonomy. For example , instead of asking find area of a rectangle with given length and breadth, teacher can ask "Area of a rectangle is 24sq.cm. Find the possible length and breadth ?" Write 4 linear algebraic expressiona with coefficient of x equal to 5. This question can have infinite number of answers. Open- ended questions can be used by teachers to assess students understanding of the concept.

Smith & Stein's 2011 work '5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions' can provide a useful routine for planning open-ended tasks. Once a task has been selected teachers can move to practice 1: Anticipating and engage in solving the task and thinking about different ways students might solve the task. This allows time to anticipate some of the challenges students might encounter, plan possible questions to stimulate student thinking and consider tools/scaffolds that should be available to ensure the task is accessible to all students. Doing this work in grade level teacher teams can be particularly effective as it allows for a broader range of perspectives to be discussed.

Providing opportunities for students to collaborate on open-ended tasks can allow them to be less dependent on the teacher and help them feel like they belong to a community of mathematicians. This necessitates establishing a classroom environment early in the year where students are used to working and learning together, sharing ideas, and supporting one another.
