How do you use online platforms and communities to learn from others in your industry?

Learning from online platform is great and what is superior to that is understanding what you want to learn and where you can find the relevant knowledge. LinkedIn for example is a great platform to learn alot from different mentors willing to share knowledge. On social media, you can get different communities to join free or premium to teach what you want to learn. Blogs, podcast on X, community channel on telegram, pages of facebook etc are all examples.

Being the CEO of a global, professional body for workplace learning, I can say from personal experience that online communities are invaluable. It is these communities that provide the context around the content we consume. We are inundated with content from so many platforms that the opportunity to make sense, demystify or challenge assumptions is how we learn best.

I leverage online communities like industry subreddits to connect with others, ask thoughtful follow-up questions when I want to go deeper on a complex topic, and find niche groups passionate about specialized subjects I want to master. This allows me to efficiently expand my skills and keep pace with advancements.

Find communities in your area of interest, usually they have free courses, webinars and free training material. There are also sites like SCRUMstudy, CertiProf and more that will provide training material and certifications for free.

In my experience, listening to others share real-life examples of how they've applied their learning to their day-to-day roles really makes the lessons stick. Having context and seeing how you can immediately use new skills and knowledge in the workplace is vital. Plus, the psychological safety of being able to return to those people for further advice is hugely beneficial.
