First & foremost, define your PROBLEM statement and ensure the arrival at functional data that supports it's possible solution. Only after deciding on the use case (problem & relevant dataset parameters) can you start looking for a pre-trained model. Then you decide what kind of machine learning technique does this use case require, will it be supervised or unsupervised. If supervised, which one will be suitable, Regression or Classification? Are you going to require annotation tasks? On a univariate use case setup, use an NER task (supervised annotations) to reduce the model size dramatically, thereby developing a pre-trained model which is very light in weight. An option is to use an LLM which is heavy with lower accuracy.

Yes, transformers are always needed, but I presume the problem is better addressed here when finding a way to load AND inference a Large Language model. PyTorch can help you tremendously on weight balancing while using multiple GPUs. But what you desperately need is the downsizing of the LLM in a way that it does not lose it's accuracy. This is where PEFT parameter efficient fine tuning and LoRA low rank adaptation of the LLM weights. In essence, those two functions help you FREEZE most of the LLM weights whilst fine tuning a smaller replica (few weights) without losing on the accuracy. Another advancement is the Quantized version of the process called QLoRA, which reduces the LLM using the library bitsandbytes from Huggingface.
