I do the coding in organizational dynamics. While I might sometimes lean towards automatic coding (e.g., using adverbs such as always, sometimes, seldom, etc., in frequency analysis), I never opt for automatic coding when coding complex processes or phenomena. The hands-on approach gives me richer insight, allows for a deeper understanding of the context, and lets me adjust the coding scheme as I go. Not to mention that I enjoy watching the patterns slowly emerge in the process ??

2 How to prepare your data?

Eine gute Vorbereitung ist die Grundlage jedes Codiervorgangs. Obwohl die Art und Weise zu kodieren jedem unterschiedlich überlassen ist (technisch unterstützt, gar KI-Nutzung?, oder handschriftlich mit Papier), h?ngt es durchaus von der Methodologie, wie die einzelnen Schritte sind. Nicht desto trotz ist der ethische Grundsatz der Anonymisierung der Daten immer einzuhalten. Alle Elemente, die zu einer Person zurückführen k?nnten (Namen, Orte, aber auch vielleicht Berufe, Ausbildung, .. sollen so kodiert sein, dass sie nicht miteinander verknüpft sein k?nnen oder auf die Person zurückführen. Statt "London" kann "gro?e Stadt" stehen. Wenn es relevant ist, dass es sich um das Ausland handelt, dann "gro?e Stadt im Ausland".

3 How to develop your codes?

Ein Absatz kann gegebenenfalls mehrfach kodiert werden (was aber bei den meisten Methoden nicht sinnvoll ist -> disjunkte Kategorien), oder eher in Unterkategorien kodiert werden. When working inductively, I typically go through 2, sometimes 3rounds of coding to refine the codebook. After coding has been completed, I conduct some preliminary theme sorting and then set the data aside for a while. Typically, this would be the time for triangulation, which isn't always feasible in organizational settings. I find it beneficial to give myself some time before immersing myself in the data again. Occasionally, I discover fresh perspectives or interpretations afterwards. Additionally, I rely heavily on visualization, as it aids me (and my clients) in establishing connections between codes and themes. Quotes are essential, of course, and I ensure to incorporate them into my final presentations every time.
