How do you use analogy to connect with your audience's emotions and values in your presentations?

Unless you are a professional sportsperson, thespian, celebrity, or explorer your area of expertise is likely to be of only limited interest to your audience. Analogies can help bridge the gap between your specialism and the audience by finding common (and probably more interesting) ground that can be explored to engage your audience with difficult (or dull) technical detail. This really works, and it follows that spending the time and effort finding engaging analogies is time well spent by any presenter.

Using analogy is the cornerstone of my lectures. By translating examples we all know into practical implications for my audience, I create meaningful connections. This approach not only makes the content relatable but also adds real value by bridging the gap between theory and practice. It transforms my talks from merely inspirational stories into practical lessons that resonate deeply with my audience’s emotions and values, making the message both impactful and actionable.

(Your topic) By considering these three factors, you can choose an analogy that connects with your audience, makes your point clear, evokes emotion Don't be afraid to get creative! Sometimes a surprising or unexpected analogy can be even more impactful.

You extend a familiar idea to connect with your audience, and then use that connection to introduce your new idea.
