How do you use agile methods to elicit requirements?

Agile methods are created to be quick to get something (iterations) out to the business as well as have something that can deal with requirement changes more frequently, in that way, one can keep up the speed on them and keep going with the business. It is flexible and adaptable, great for the unknown. Other agile methods include Crystal methods, Feature Driven and Test Driven Developments, etc.

Managing API requirements takes a lot of time and effort due to its complex nature. API Governance teams with multiple concurrent API requirements must fight against time to validate their relevance against existing API portfolios. The API design team must need a central view to work on API requirements. API Review teams must review APIs and convey feedback to the API designers so that the initial requirements are implemented properly. KANBAN is an extremely versatile framework that helps the Governance Teams to analyze the backlog of API requirements, the Design Team to prioritize the API requirements design efficiently, and the Review Team to perform a streamlined Review Process that helps maintain a robust API portfolio.

For me, I find the Agile method helpful in terms of stakeholder involvement as it encourages continuous collaboration and communication between the development teams and stakeholders. This ensures that requirements are understood, validated, and refined in an ongoing manner. Agile methods also help in prioritizing the delivery of valuable features early.

Using agile methods for requirements elicitation is crucial for project flexibility and responsiveness. Key steps include Engaging stakeholders, creating user stories, prioritizing based on importance, using epics/themes, visualizing via story mapping, and creating prototypes. Define clear acceptance criteria and emphasize feedback loops. Adapt to changing requirements and use lightweight documentation. Agile tools like JIRA aid collaboration. Conduct retrospectives for continuous improvement, ensuring alignment with stakeholder needs throughout the software development lifecycle.

Requirement elicitation techniques like USER INTERVIEWS, FOCUS GROUPS, PROTOTYPING, SHADOWING, QUESTIONNAIRES, and even WORKSHOPS can be utilized to uncover requirements in an agile fashion. Once requirements are elicited USER STORIES can be utilized to document concise requirements written from a person's perspective focusing on the value or benefit the user will receive. The PRODUCT BACKLOG on the other hand lists down those user stories according to priority. During BACKLOG REFINEMENT, product owner and dev team review and prioritize items for the next sprint. STORY BOARDING helps visualize a user's journey in relation to interactions with the product. SPRINT REVIEWS and CONTINUOUS FEEDBACK LOOP aims to continuously refine requirements.

We should apply Agile values and principles mainly face to face communication, embracing change, emphasis more on substance than documentation!

In Agile methodology you do NOT elicit requirements!. Elicit requirement is a waterfall terminology. Product Owner will write user stories!

Fragility or constantly changing requirements that require continuous stakeholder engagement may disrupt a team's rhythm. Proper sprint planning and meet-afters will help to sort this out. Non-functional requirements could be overlooked when writing user stories. Writing stories from a system's perspective may help. Scalability issues for large-scale projects/enterprises. Applying SAFe would work.

Agile embraces "working software over comprehensive documentation", finding a balance between the need of sufficient documentation with agile principles of simplicity can be very challenging, especially in a highly regulated industry where documentation becomes very crucial.

For instance, in a lack of clarity in requirements, use user stories to break down requirements into smaller, more manageable pieces. Clear acceptance criteria for each user story will provide a detailed expectation of what constitutes a complete requirement and a prototype/wireframing will help to visualize requirements. This will make it easier for stakeholders to understand and provide feedback.

I have use below agile methods to elicit requirements: 1.User Stories: I have often used user stories to capture requirements from a user's perspective. 2.Prioritization: I have collaborated with the Product Owner and stakeholders to prioritize user stories in the product backlog. 3.Backlog Grooming: I have Participated in backlog grooming sessions where the team reviews and refines user stories. 4.Sprint Planning: I have always attended sprint planning meetings to discuss which user stories will be addressed in the upcoming sprint. Above provided are some of the agile methods, one can adapt the approach to requirements elicitation to align with Agile principles and deliver value to customers iteratively and collaboratively.
