It's important to mention that if what you'll be printing is not just a piece of decoration but a mechanical part for a machine and/or prototype, or a first try for a new product, or some orthosis or prosthesis, you should use CAD/CAE software like Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Inventor, Catia and similars. These software will provide you with tools to analyze your model in terms of resistance, flexibility, mass, center of gravity, movable parts, joints, assembly tolerances, and many other features. They were also made for working with manufacturing machines, so they have building rules to guarantee that the part you're designing really is something that can be printed/manufactured later.
The second step to innovate with 3D printing is to experiment with different materials and settings. 3D printing allows you to use a variety of materials, such as plastics, metals, ceramics, and even biological materials, to create objects with different properties and functions. You can also adjust the settings of your printer, such as temperature, speed, layer height, and infill, to optimize the quality, strength, and appearance of your prints. I would also add the step of choosing your printing hardware. For instance, printers that use resin are completely different from the ones that use filament, not only in material but how they work, print, and what level of finishing you can apply later. Also, some printers favor vertical precision, others horizontal, some others will favor small detailed parts while others are good for big pieces. These are all factors that need to be considered before acquiring your hardware and starting to play with settings and materials.
The third step to innovate with 3D printing is to incorporate other components and technologies into your prints. 3D printing is not limited to creating static or standalone objects. You can also integrate other elements, such as electronics, sensors, magnets, LEDs, or motors, to add functionality and interactivity to your prints. One good use these days is the conductive printing material that allows easy integration of electrical parts into your print after it's done.
some time it saves a lot of time and money and allows for extremely though geometry to be manufactured if you fix spacific geometry in specific oriantation but print the model with extra material in other places to allow The part to be machined later to get accurate dimensions on other features of the part this way you enjoy the spacial capabilities of 3D printing while also having the benefits of traditional machining

The ability to quickly iterate on a design is powerful, and with experience the hardware related setbacks will become far less common. I don't think competition/ criticism is a good way to think about it -- if there's a niche for a desired "thing" then people will make it. Some people just want to make their own, others will improve upon your design, that's just the way it is. Finding a community and learning is important, that's for sure.
3D printing is a first step! All too often we are in a mindset, trying to put our best foot forward and looking to succeed at the first chance we get. That is NOT what 3D printing is about! 3D printing IS about making multiple variations of the same idea. 3D printing IS about making samples that do not work. 3D printing IS about learning something from each and every version/project/sample we generate. Finally, 3D printing IS about gathering our knowledge and learning from all our samples (current + previous builds) to get the right combination of features, details, designs that work right. 3D printing IS about making mistakes to learn. I saved all my "failed" versions to remind me of what to do next time.
Although that are some excellent printers in the market that are very easy to use out of the box, 3d printing is an incremental process. Most of the time your model will be adjusted between prints with inputs that you learned from other attempts. And, if you have some knowledge in mechanics, electronics, or programming, the 3d printer itself can be customized or optimized to your specific use or to include some new feature that you want and wasn't originally part of that model.
The fifth step to innovate with 3D printing is to share and inspire others. 3D printing is not only a personal or individual activity. It is also a social and collaborative one. You can share your designs, prints, and experiences with others through online platforms, communities, or events, such as Thingiverse, Reddit, or Maker Faire. You can also inspire others by teaching, mentoring, or supporting them in their 3D printing journey. I would say that one of the strongest aspects in the 3d printing is the community and sharing your experiences. You can learn a lot about printers, printing processes, materials, modeling software, and much more by interacting with the 3d printing community on forums, video platforms, and innovation events.
The sixth and final step to innovate with 3D printing is to challenge yourself and have fun. 3D printing is a technology that can unleash your imagination and creativity. You can use it to create anything you want, from practical and functional objects, to artistic and expressive ones, to experimental and futuristic ones. You can also use it to solve problems, explore opportunities, or pursue your passions. The only limit is your own mind. So challenge yourself to try new things, learn new skills, and push your boundaries. And most importantly, have fun and enjoy the process of 3D printing.
Additive manufacturing traditional products, ones that may already have a stream lined injection molding process or other fabrication methods, only makes sense for areas that do not have access to these services. The real value in 3D printing comes from the ability to create parts / products that are not able to be fabricated in a tradional way. Some examples for my industry, orthotics and prosthetics, are custom flexion and attachment plates, retrofittable flexible inner sockets, uniquely designed protective and cosmetic covers, custom cushioning / padding that has different compressive properties based on material selection, infill ration and infill pattern and many more.
