How do you update and maintain your resume regularly?

Updating your resume quarterly allows you to remain responsive to opportunities both internally and externally! Those who express interest and self-advocate early are often given stronger consideration.

Keep track of the action you took and the metrics once you complete something, even if you just document in excel. If your company has formal reviews, use that time to reflect on your accomplishments and copy what you wrote over to your notes! I don't think it's necessary to update your actual resume each quarter, but would suggest every 6 months to a year unless you are open to a new role or promotion. It becomes easy when you have a pick list of new items you've achieved!

Here are few tips to update periodically: 1.Regular Reviews: Update your resume every six months with new skills, projects, and achievements. 2.Stay Relevant: Tailor your resume to reflect current industry trends and keywords. 3.Keep It Clean: Remove outdated information and ensure the format is modern and professional.

One challenge to the updating every quarter advice - it means you might end up incrementally adding to your resume when it needs a more fundamental change. Consider starting from scratch to make sure your CV reflects the story you want to tell today, not the historical one. Particularly if you've been in a job for a few years, or are looking to change direction, this could help you articulate what you're all about.

One can review and revise it every few months or after completing a significant project or achieving a new milestone. For example, if I finish a successful recruitment drive or implement a new HR software system, I immediately add those achievements, detailing my role and the outcomes.

Don't spend inordinate amounts of time on customizations — if you have a solid, targeted resume, you will be able to quickly customize the following: 1) Customize the target title in your headline 2) Tweak language in the summary to align with the priorities in the job description 3) Rerank lists of accomplishments based on the focus of the role, based on what is mentioned early and often in the job description, as well as what you uncover during your networking conversations!

Your resume should be a response to the "ask" which is the job description. The more tailoring, the more success you will have. Is it time consuming? Yes Is it worth the time? Yes Do more than the next person!

As you complete meaningful projects, add them to your resume and remove experiences that aren't as impactful. When I remove things from my resume, I add them to an excel document. You may need to put that experience back in to customize your resume for certain roles. From my job seeking experience (with my background in HR), I created a straightforward resume targeting similar HR roles and a separate resume with a project based approach as I was looking to move into consulting or project based work. Additional tip, ALWAYS spell out acronyms unless they are well known - i.e. HR!

Example, “Increased QoQ sales 17% by designing new conversion-focused Facebook Ad imagery.” Be relevant ? -Frame your experience to fit what the hiring manager is looking for (ex: if the position's description wants someone amazing at recruiting executives, focus on your experience recruiting executives and minimize your other recruiting experience). -Omit credentials that don't relate to the role you're applying for. -If you're applying for a creative role, include a link to your polished online portfolio. Avoid these ? -Use "I", "Me," "Mine," and "Ours." -A picture -Spelling mistakes!

Do NOT try to make your resume look "pretty". There should be no color or photos such as a head shot. Make it easy to read, and the rest will follow.

The style of your resume is just as important as the content. Keep it clean, easy to read, and visually appealing. No crazy fonts or cluttered designs. Choose a format that makes your key points stand out. I recommend using a clear, professional template. If you’re applying in tech, a modern format works well, but if it’s a creative role, you can go a bit more bold. Example: When you shift from a startup to agency work, switch to a simpler format that highlight skills and results in a more digestible way. The simpler, the better. This is actually a huge myth—rarely do companies use an ATS with filtering capabilities for keywords. A human is likely reviewing every application, so optimize your resume for a recruiter, not the ATS. Focus on making it easy to read and with your most important information at the top. Don’t bury the lede of what you do!

The ATS is NOT out to get you. To optimize your resume for ATS, use relevant keywords, avoid graphics, keep it simple, use bullet points, spell out abbreviations, customize your resume, and proofread it carefully.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are the gatekeepers of resumes today. Many resumes never make it to a human because they aren’t optimized for ATS. Use keywords from the job description. Any standard not publicly available is a scam. I can't go anywhere to see what ATS specs are; yet been in IT for 25+ years reading specs the entire time. All other IT standards are freely available.

I personally update my LinkedIn more than my actual resume.
