Templates make life easier for businesses. And this is 100% true information. It's just really important to review your templates regularly. I use the so-called checklist for control: -Does the template match current goals, values, and style? - Do you need to update or replace information, images, fonts, colors and layouts? - Gathering feedback from colleagues, clients or stakeholders about their perception of the template. And finally, we make the necessary changes and data. Such simple and such important actions can save time in the future.

A good template is a dynamic template. This means that the teams using the template have the ability to share feedback on their experience. E.g. Are they recreating a specific slide again and again? Then maybe that needs to be added to the master template. Are the struggling to find good icons to use? Then maybe that could be added as a separate icon library. Are there any new PowerPoint functions that can make the template better and/or more user-friendly? Update accordingly. Often times we see master templates that never update. Teams just do what they can, fiddle with the master slides, and eventually you end up with a messy inconsistent template or have 10x different versions of it.

Standardize everything: Use the same fonts, colors, and layouts throughout your template. This creates a clean and consistent look. 3. Clear names: Give your slides, placeholders, and elements clear and easy-to-understand names. This will make it easier for people to find what they need. 4. Alignment is key: Use grids and alignment tools to make sure your slides look balanced and professional.

One thing I've found helpful is to add "slide tips" in the master template. These are small boxes with advice that are placed outside the slide view. In other words, you can see them in Edit Mode but they will not show when presented in Slideshow Mode. This is very helpful for teams and can be of guidance when people create their slides.

To add to this: I would generally advise against adding high resolution images directly in the master slides, e.g. on cover slides. They can really make the file size big. Instead use image placeholders.

When working with a large organization, many people use templates, and often these are non-designers. This makes communicating template guidelines crucial. To ensure proper usage, we typically include a How-to slide in the master template. This way, it’s always accessible and can’t be accidentally deleted. This slide covers basics like adding new slides, applying specific layouts, inserting images into placeholders, replacing images, and using assets like icons and charts. The guidelines might also include a comparison image of the typeface versus the displaying typeface to ensure proper font rendering.

To take this one step further, you can combine the guidelines with a image bank of stock photos for the team to use + an icon library that are aligned with your brand style. This way you will save the team a ton of time on finding the right images and icons, but also ensure consistency in your decks.

Create an outline that includes use case scenarios, an image library, product mockups, general rules, and example slides. More importantly: find it a proper home — ensure it doesn’t overwhelm the template, while still lives within the arm reach.

It's all about the layout which is great for making information look professional but often fails to communicate bigger ideas. A good option when preparing templates is to apply a custom design to key slides that will be used across the organisation and have a custom 'slide picker' deck as part of the presentation template. A refreshing template and 'slide picker' at least once a year will help to keep the design fresh, on brand, and to reflect any organisational changes.
