One of the first steps in understanding cyber risk is to conduct a maturity assessment/gap assessment of your facility to determine where you are in terms of your cybersecurity posture and where you want to be (depending on industry standards). The high-level assessment as per IEC 62443 will provide you risk mitigation strategy and a cybersecurity framework roadmap. A few concepts to be understood during the risk assessment would be SuC, Risk appetite, Corporate Risk Matrix, Risk tolerance, and Residual risk. However, the most important is to develop a governance/framework that creates a cybersecurity culture. This culture should be adopted at the top level for the successful implementation of the framework. C-level buy is critical.

In my experience, it's important to understand the scope under consideration so the focus is on the most critical assets and data where applicable controls are deployed to mitigate threats. For other assets/ data, a different set of applicable controls can be deployed to manage resources and budgets. We recommend creating an inventory list of all assets’ hardware/ software with OS/ Firmware and software revisions. This increases the visibility of all assets. Organizations can then mitigate the risk by deploying controls like patch management/ anti-virus/ isolate systems that cannot be patched, enable on-system firewalls, system hardening, Access Control & Authorization, backup, secure remote access, Incident response, training, etc.
