How do you train staff to use building information modeling?

BIM Training needs to be role-based. So, Project managers will be trained on parts of BIM different from Design Managers, and both are different from planners and so on. Training needs to be based on the relevant BIM uses.

Start by providing comprehensive BIM software training, emphasizing key features and functionalities. Foster collaboration through team exercises, encouraging the integration of BIM into the entire project lifecycle. Highlight the importance of standardized data and consistent model management practices. Promote ongoing education to keep staff updated on BIM advancements and best practices. Encourage communication and coordination among team members to maximize the benefits of BIM in enhancing project efficiency and collaboration.

? Skill in engineering principles and modern methods is very important. But what is more important than that is the level of experience and professional insight. This is the result of specialized, individual and organizational skills of people that can help the team and project to succeed. ?? My suggested indicators for evaluating people: ? Theoretical or practical education ? Specialized skills and experiences ? The amount of teamwork skills ? The state of interdisciplinary skills ? Level of knowledge and managerial skills ? The level of self-motivation, energy ? Some cases can be solved in the short term with training, but a good part of the indicators need experience and evaluation and qualification. ?? Perhaps you desire BIM personnel to understand the information management process, or want UKAS Accreditation to ISO 19650-2 Information Management certification for businesses using BIM. 2. Identify The Knowledge, Skills, competencies, and technical abilities necessary. 3. Assess existing knowledge and determine knowledge gaps. 4. Focus on your training needs and find a training provider that can tailor content to suit those goals and organizational objectives. 5. Support continual learning, measure performance, review, improve, and repeat.

I feel training delivered in person either virtually, giving the flexibility to join from anywhere in the world, or in person and face-to-face offers the most value and engagement. Online-only courses are OK as a basis for learning, however, to really gain insight into a subject and have it delivered to you in a tailored way, specific to your desired learning outcomes you need to have it live with a specialist trainer in that field. The ability to ask what this means to me and my company, or projects for example is so important.

Online courses are the best approach as we are in modern world and for some companies it become a right choice due to the busy schedules working on their daily projects. so Online courses give employees flexibility to learn on their pace and in this case company decision makers have ability to choose where to take these training around the world considering the training quality and standards they are looking for.

Companies can implement BIM using a pilot project approach. A designated team completes or works on a project while identifying issues and training the rest of the staff. BIM training needs to be based on real use cases. For example, instead of training on Synchro, the training shall be training on using BIM for planning and construction sequencing.

Real-world examples and case studies are important in training as they bring relevance to the subject, perhaps using examples of similar types of BIM projects you have worked on in the past. To make training engaging you must demonstrate beyond just the theoretical side, always referencing what these means to each different delegate and their particular involvement. If this can be done interactively, the learning is embedded further. Consider gamification and group activities.

In my opinion, it's beneficial to conduct a pilot project implementation as it can reveal potential risks and provide an opportunity to address them early on. It's also advisable to work on a completed project to compare the outcomes of the traditional approach with the BIM approach.

Any kind of tool training should not just be a session; it should be a workshop. Hands-on training is the most effective method for engaging people. most importantly, the trainees should be isolated from the project works during this time to maintain focus

A project oriented training is the best. after finishing the basics of the training or the tools working on a real project is a crucial point but it should be a pilot project with available resources of information's such as drawings, models and documents. I don't recommend working on an ongoing project in the training as it will have an impact on time and stress on the trainee.

Reinforcing training with additional support days and assistance, workshops, video demos or guidance documents on the processes covered, ensures learners retain knowledge for much longer. CPD is important in many of our AEC / BIM professions and affiliated bodies. Feedback based on understanding, and knowledge performance metrics helps staff understand their performance and determines knowledge or skill gaps to mobilize for future improvement.

Assignments & feedbacks play a crucial role post completion of the training. People should be followed-up regularly on their progress with the new learnings. This will keep people involved & engaged even after the completion of the sessions

adding KPI's and milestone is a good practice in the training while it's ongoing. after finishing the training you have to follow up the trainees and give some advices and answer their questions if needed.

I would like to highlight the importance of creating a clear KPIs while involving your team in their creation in the first place considering that development is an ongoing process. Identifying the points strengths, weakness for your team that you will either use or work on its development to align with evolving BIM standards. This approach will ensures the effectiveness of the training program nevertheless ensuring its responsive and adaptive to the high wave of new technologies as it involves the training provider and the targeted training audience.

Establish a support system for questions and concerns, ensuring continuous assistance. Regularly provide constructive feedback on their BIM implementations, fostering a learning culture. This approach enhances staff confidence, promotes skill refinement, and ensures a successful integration of BIM into their workflow.

Set KPI’s for each training objective and understand what you want to measure in relation to your organizational learning goals. By incorporating quizzes or exams to score understanding or competency, you can be results-driven, which can often help an organization understand how well the training was received, and importantly how well it was understood. This helps measure a received return on investment. As suggested, there are many methods to gather insights and feedback. You have to be reactive to what went well, and areas to improve in the training after each session. Perhaps more or less detail to certain areas or adjusting the flow of the course to suit the audience.

Anonymous feedback at the end of training is essential. Feedback should be requested on the material, lecturer, structure, etc. This feedback shall enhance next versions of this training.

training evaluation should happen in the middle of the training to get a feedback from trainee in order to make corrective actions if needed. after the training is finished a final evaluation should happen also and I do recommend to get another one after 3 to 6 months from the company it will make the training evolve in the right direction.

In my experience, to have clear KPIs play a crucial role in making your training successful. Adjusting training content to align with your organization vision and your staff needs. Furthermore you need to seek adopting new technologies and techniques. I totally encourage Role rotations among your organization as it can be an opportunity to explore new ideas and reach higher horizons.
