How do you track site crawling errors?

Detecting crawling errors on time, not only helps you keep a clean, error-free site that will help you build a loyal customer base and secure a strong online presence, but it will also increase the trust and authority of your website in the eyes of your visitors. It can also help you improve your share of voice indicators by having a better user and buyer experience. Another thing I’d love to add is how promptly you take care of the errors found, because if you take a long time to fix them up, then you’re in reactive mode, when you’re supposed to be in proactive mode (i.e. fixing everything as soon as possible). The real challenge is decreasing the time breach, between error discovery (SEO) and implementing required fixes (IT).

Site errors affect your entire website and indicate that the search engine could not connect to your server or access your robots.

To fix crawl errors, you will need to identify the cause of the error and take steps to correct it. If you have a redirect loop, you will need to break the loop by changing the redirect destination. Check your site's robots.txt file to make sure it is not blocking any important pages from being crawled. Use a CDN (content delivery network) to improve the loading speed of your pages. This can help to reduce the number of 404 errors. Monitor your crawl errors on a regular basis and take steps to fix them as soon as possible.

To track crawling errors in Google Search Console, access the 'Coverage' report, which outlines issues Googlebot encounters during indexing. GSC provides additional reading materials to assist you in fixing these issues.

In Google Search Console (GSC), you'll find the relevant crawling issues under Indexing > Pages. This section will highlight a range of reasons why your pages may not be indexed. For every page that has an issue, GSC offers additional reading resources so you can work towards fixing it.

The report can be obtained in the Search Console. To do this, go to the Coverage section from the main menu, as shown in the screenshot above. It is easier to fix such issues: when analyzing them, you can see the specific pages that have issues. URL errors display a list from most important to minor issues.

Bing Webmaster Tools (BWT) is Microsoft's version of Google Search Console. It provides information on Crawling issues in its Site Explorer section. What's great about BWT is that it's possible to view crawling issues for your main business domain as well as any subdomains through a filtered drop-down view. In fact, I've found the User interface for reviewing issues much better in Bing WebMaster Tools than Google Search Console. Even though this Analytics tool is geared towards improving Search visibility in Bing Search, I've found the BWT insights useful from an overall seo perspective.

Similar to Google Search Console, the URL inspection tool allows users to check if there are any crawling, indexing, or markup errors that may need attention. You can check in real-time if there are any SEO issues.

Use Bing Webmaster Tools: 1. Go to Bing Webmaster Tools, sign in. 2. Add your site and verify it. 3. Select your site and navigate to “Crawl Information.” 4. Review crawl summary, errors, and warnings. 5. Investigate error details. 6. Fix errors like 404s or server issues. 7. Request Bing to re-crawl fixed pages. 8. Monitor progress regularly. 9. Explore more tools for better SEO. Improve site visibility and performance on Bing.

In addition to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, there are other tools that can help you track crawling errors. For example, Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop software that crawls your site and detects issues like broken links, redirects, and duplicate content.

We utilize Screaming Frog to crawl both SMB and enterprise websites effectively. The biggest difference between Screaming Frog and other crawlers is its forensic level scans. SF covers the basics such as broken links, redirects, duplicate content, bad meta, robots, sitemaps, etc. In addition, it provides a great visual of site architecture producing directory and tree graph illustrations. From there you can venture into analytics all the way to a Looker studio report scan. SF is a great tool but still needs context and that is where the recommendations and roadmap become the most important to our clients.
