Another step to track progress and measure impact of your strategic plan is to choose relevant indicators. One thing that I have learned through various cycles is, sometimes we are quick to hold on to the data set, points, indicators that talk our language, or are in sync with what we want to portray! While this is a good practice, reflective practice for other indicators or the ones which give results or show a pattern different than we envisaged is one that aids in learning, critical thinking about the process, learning and sticking to the path that we visualise.

3 Use a logic model

A logic model is a useful tool to track progress and measure impact of your strategic plan. A logic model is a visual representation of the logic or rationale behind your plan. It shows the relationships between your inputs (such as resources, staff, time, etc.), your activities (such as programs, strategies, interventions, etc.), your outputs (such as products, services, events, etc.), and your outcomes (such as short-term, intermediate, and long-term results or impacts). A logic model helps you identify and communicate the assumptions, risks, and external factors that may affect your plan. It also helps you monitor and evaluate your plan systematically and comprehensively.

One thing I've found helpful with regards to logic models is that they can serve as an excellent outline when you are writing technical proposals for grants. It allows you to sum up your program in a concise and easy to read graphic. Including logic models in Request for Proposals (RFP's) allows the reader to get a snapshot of your program as a whole and allows them to see the "big picture".

4 Involve stakeholders

Another step to track progress and measure impact of your strategic plan is to involve stakeholders. Stakeholders are the people or groups who have an interest or stake in your plan, such as students, parents, teachers, administrators, board members, community partners, funders, etc. Stakeholders can provide valuable feedback, insights, perspectives, and suggestions for your plan. They can also help you collect and interpret data, disseminate and use findings, and celebrate and share successes. You should engage stakeholders throughout the planning, implementation, and evaluation stages of your plan.

5 Review and adjust

The final step to track progress and measure impact of your strategic plan is to review and adjust. Reviewing and adjusting means analyzing and reflecting on the data and information you have collected and comparing them with your objectives and indicators.
