How do you test and validate data vault loading processes and results?

Depending on sources relevant to the load requirements there can be different approach. Organization now have varied source systems from ERP to Appliance data to RDBMS to NoSQL to files/share point for the ETL/ELT to pull data for the data warehouse. The approach also required to know how many years of historical data load is required for each sources. Incremental approach need to refine which key columns would drive the delta changes relevant to pick. Defining load also need to finalize if any sources you need relatime versus batch. Once we accumulate all above information then we can finalize load types relevant to a source system.

There is a third load type, and that is the refresh load. Typically this can be run on an on-demand basis to ensure that all the data is up-to-date. It is a full extract from the source system, but follows an incremental load type. I.E. Only bring those records that are not the same up to the current state. This is very helpful for when you do not fully trust all your data feeds (especially when getting data from SaaS solutions, where you cannot control the extract of the deltas).

As per my comment on the load types, the patterns need to align to the load types. But with my comment that the refresh load type follows the incremental load type, likewise the refresh load would leverage the incremental load pattern.

Cannot stress more how important the testing and validating process is. Without the right testing and validation, you cannot trust the data. Process / pipelines can break at any time and for any reason, whether it is unexpected data from the source system, or a corruption of data while on flight.
