I feel like often its good to start with the simplest question. Ask them if they know exactly where O2 that they breathe in goes? Most of them will say to CO2 - "We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon-dioxide". But its a nice viewpoint shift to see that most O2 is converted to water. Which they also breathe out (hence fogging in cold weather). This works at all education levels, and sets up a nice field to start going into the actual biochemistry of everything.
