How do you teach design thinking to others?

Instead of talking about understanding the user, talk about FEELING THE USER. A classic example to make your crowd understand the importance of design thinking, and design generally in the UX industry - Is the ketchup bottle example. Ask which bottle is more user friendly: the old full glass one, or the squeezer one? Let them try pouring ketchup with the first and the second one, and after that connect it to users trying to use digital products.

Teaching design thinking to others involves a combination of methods and approaches to foster creativity, problem-solving, and empathy. Here are some contributions to the process: Interactive Workshops: Organize hands-on workshops that encourage participants to collaborate and tackle real-world problems using design thinking principles. These workshops can include brainstorming sessions, prototyping, and user empathy exercises. Case Studies: Analyze and discuss real design thinking case studies that showcase successful problem-solving through empathy, ideation, and iteration. This helps learners understand practical applications.

The core concept of empathy in the design thinking process is used to absolve performative research and engagement practices. The word and practice of gaining empathy have been corrupted so much that design practitioners rarely surrender their creative skills to be empathetic. Hence, practitioners need to interpret the traditional step of gaining empathy into something more radical and participatory, which may enable practitioners to acknowledge the reality of the individuals who are most proximate to the challenges. Facilitators must build co-design and participatory decision-making processes to bring diverse perspectives, experiences, and learnings into the learning process before developing an exclusionary prototype or intervention.

Do a brainstorming session. If Yarden mentioned that he is using Crazy 8s, my team and I usually conduct design critiques. We will have many ideas generated from the sessions. It also gives a chance to participant to train their design thinking in a short of period time.

I mostly use the Crazy 8s method in ideation process. In crazy 8s you fold a piece of paper 3 times, and get 8 squares. After that you put a timer for 1 minute, and sketch/draw/write the craziest idea you have inside one of those 8 squares. After that, repeat the process for the other 7 squares and voila! You get yourself 8 ideas to develop in 8 minutes. // Tip 1 - Make colleagues do it with you to get wide range of ideas Tip 2 - use black market instead of a pen to make yourself being precise and the idea to be seen from a far.

Design thinking is more of a mindset than a process. Using design thinking to foster innovation involves framing the mindset to believe in empathy, curiously uncovering user needs, problems, what and whys, and intentionally happy to go through a feedback loop process in achieving success. Design thinking isn't only peculiar to designers but other fields as well because it explains the power of using constant user feedback to iteratively refine the best solutions. Hence, to teach design thinking to others, its important for them to cultivate a mindset that is intentionally empathetic and ready for iterative changes and solutions.

100% agree, when I was working as a design teacher for teenagers its really important to repeat some point couple of time, so it sticks to them for real. And also it will be a good approach to try and make the students fall in love with the design thinking, because it can be very useful in other aspect of life.

The best way to understand design thinking is to learn through doing. Perhaps there is a problem in your own local community that you think needs to be addressed. Talk to people and listen deeply to understand the problem from different perspectives. Have an open mindset and interrogate any assumptions or biases you might hold.

My own journey into design has first and foremost been one of experiencing the design process. Yes, there are tons of books and papers to read on process and tools. But nothing comes close to the embodied learning that doing design births. And judging from clients, that is the most powerful way for more people than me…
