How do you summarize complex ideas for diverse readers?

I find it useful to identify the core ideas of an article, & focus on conveying those in a summary. Paraphrasing is essential, & can help promote understanding-after all, a summary has much less space to get across the same ideas that a longer text did. What to leave out: - Irrelevant details - Jargon (whilst retaining key terms) - Citing the author(s) throughout the summary (rookie mistake)

I feel that when an abstract is written for diverse readers it should be as a perspective.The write up should have a defined purpose.The complex idea should be in lucid language so that it can be comprehended. If it is for a journal then it will have its specifications as per the purpose of your writing .The complex ideas should have the 3A’s for the diverse readers as acceptable , applicable and appreciative .

1. identify the key words of your essay or article 2. introduce and explain the key ideas briefly 3. explain the relevance of the research and its informative value, scope of target audience 4. use lucid language, lesser jargon 5. use cohesive devices and linguistics markers to enable an easy transition in reading, and comprehension in short, a summary or abstract should highlight and explain the key words and arguments so that the reader can understand the purpose and relevance of the write up. Use of cohesive devices and linguistic markers would help make the reading easy.

I have asked my students in communication sciences and psychology, to imagine they are talking to a group of people that includes their sister/ brother/ parent, a pupil at secondary school and someone they just met at the local supermarket.

Start by thoroughly understanding the complex content yourself. Then, identify the core concepts and main points that must be conveyed. Use simple and concise language to explain these ideas, avoiding jargon and technical terms whenever possible. Consider your audience's background and knowledge level, providing additional context or explanations as needed. Use examples, analogies, or visuals to illustrate key points. Organize the summary logically, presenting ideas in a coherent and sequential manner. Finally, revise and edit to ensure clarity and readability, and consider seeking feedback from readers with diverse backgrounds to refine your summary further.

Dissemination is the goal of academic writing, so taking survey of your intended audience can truly capture the scope of your findings. In addition to tailoring your piece to your audience, take note that your information is meeting the needs or addressing areas of concern of that audience as well. Oftentimes our academic writing can come from a place of pressure for publications, pressing agendas, or pending graduation requirements, which can take away from the content we are relaying. Thus, from personal experience I recommend pulling from a holistic perspective to encompass meaningful renditions of your work.

Throughout this process, I maintain an awareness of the diverse audience, tailoring my language and examples to resonate with their varied backgrounds.

The context of the audience is important. Consider the most relevant experience of the audience as it relates to your topic and in this way relate the topic to their context.

It depends on the purpose of the summary, and the audience and their expectations. Merely summarising is largely mechanical - delivering purpose and intent is strategic. Clear, jargon-free and relevant details are needed as others have noted. There is a challenge in taking a complex idea and essentially making it appear simpler without losing the appreciation of the inherent quality of complexity and its implications. If there are implications to an idea or thing being complex, ideally a summary should prepare a reader to consider acceptance of a more complex picture as the basis for decision-making rather than relying on simplistic understandings that may reduce cognitive effort but risk sidelining important concerns.

Consider gaining a better understanding of the interests, concerns, needs and preferences of your audience by reading through forums or Facebook pages relevant to your target audience. Make a note of recurring topics and the language used in the conversations. This will enhance the quality and depth of your writing and help you tailor your message so it resonates with your target readers. You can also share a draft of your writing with individuals from your target audience, to get feedback on the clarity of the message you are trying to get across. Remember that one concept/word might be interpreted differently depending on the audience you are targeting. Language matters.

I have a tendency to over-write when I'm expressing my ideas and thoughts. This excitement generated around my work tends to lead me to ramble about ideas or stretch components out further than needed. When editing, a tip I have found helpful is being concise. As you write, see how you can tone down the exasperation in the sentence and relay the same idea with fewer - more specific - words.

I often give my work to someone else to read. I am WORDY! Having another perspective helps me simplify and eliminate jargon so that the writing is more accessible.

Weave a story. When explanations become narratives they can build connection with audiences and situate big ideas and concepts into a context or lived experience. This is indeed the wonderful benefit of using ethnography both as a practice and an output. Make it real. Make concepts do work. Centre it in story.

Keep it simple stupid! As frequent consumers of scientific articles, we may unconsciously complicate our writing with jargon, nominalizations, expletives, and passive voice. How often have you reread a sentence in frustration? I'm an advocate of clear, concise sentences, a pivotal element in retaining your audience's attention!

Always include a summarizing sentence or two at the beginning of each chapter or subsection. Depending on the tone and audience, it can be something like this: 1) In this section/chapter, we will discuss 'the effect of X'. (formal approach) 2) Now, let's discuss the 'effect of X'! (informal, friendlier approach) This is effective because a) if the reader skims the article/paper/book they usually read the first or last sentence; b) it simplifies complex ideas.

If the goal is simplification of complexity, then any revision should be a re-write of 'denser' passages. However, do not sacrifice credulity, integrity and truthfulness for the sake of simplicity. A topic from the natural sciences can be inherently more complex than a topic from the media landscape. Try to explain scientific ideas simply, without misinforming the reader or excluding facts that are crucial to the topic at hand.

When conveying complex ideas to a broad readership, it's crucial to remember that learning should be fun! Your readers may be engaging with your content optionally, so it is all the more important to make your writing as colorful, captivating, and "relatable" as possible. Present examples that help people connect the topic with their lives, and don't be afraid to use humor in your writing. When your readers become invested in the content, they'll be more excited to read it and may even want to continue learning more about the topic.

Consider ways to make the idea multi-sensory. Visuals, including diagrams or infographics are one obvious way to do this, but don't be afraid to explore examples that draw on as many senses as possible. Any time you can tap into a new sense, it's a new neural pathway that might have a chance to connect with different audiences. If you're communicating verbally, you have to do this with a description or story that references a sound or a smell or a feeling, but if you can tap into the smell of pumpkin spice or the irritation of a wool sweater, it can be a hook for an important point.

Try to take a complex idea (from neuroscience or machine learning), read on it, and then summarize it for yourself really quickly. If it is an idea from a field you know about, then write it down as if three different groups of people are reading: a 6-year-old, a teenager, and an adult.
