The easy answer is “Start gaming, be a gamer.”, and you’ll know how gamers think. What if you’re not a gamer? Are you out of luck? No. B/c even as a gamer myself, it’s impossible to know each & every audience, because of the sheer number of communities there are: PC gamers. Console gamers. Casual. Variety. Pro. Some gamers are fans of certain game franchises, or types of games. The general gaming audience is huge, but you need to focus on which segment you want to collab with, deep dive into their world, play their games, read the sub-reddits, follow the socials, and put in the time to immerse yourself in that community, so that you can be seen as credible & authentic, b/c if you do it right, you will be. Oh and Twitch helps too.

Understanding your audience is key in the gaming industry. Use tools like analytics, surveys, and social media to gain invaluable insights into their preferences, motivations, and interactions with your game. Don't forget to engage in the games you create and critique those you play, assessing feedback from platforms like Steam. Esports is like sports. You might not be interested in sports at all, which gives you natural disadvantage in understanding this niche. Or you are interested, but only in Hockey and F1 — you won't know how to speak to the slopestyle snowboarding fans. Either get yourself into those spaces and feel the hype, or speak with and hire veteran actors within the space, or — even better — speak to players AND fans and combine their learnings. As soon as you understand that "one thing" that makes their hearts burn, the one all encompassing important current rivalry story for instance, you have a foot in the door.

Totally agree - content is king. Whereas lots of other aspects are needed, particularly for land based slots, such as interactions with bill validators, ticket printers, buttons/keys/switches, not to mention the SAS connection to the Casino Management System, much of this can and should be out-sourced. As I often say - if you were the head of design for Ford or GM, the last thing you’d put your talented designers doing is to design a tire. If you are chasing a trend then you are already behind. Instead, look for opportunities to subvert a trend then generate a disruptive hypothesis that you can test. A disruptive hypothesis is a statement that messes with a cliche. For example: Cliche: In a racing game, a single player drives the car Disruptive hypothesis: What if we make a racing game where 4 players control each wheel of a car? It’s ok to start with something that sounds wrong or unintuitive. This means you are starting your exploration away from your competitors. Once you have made several of these hypotheses test test test! Find the ones that elicit a strong emotional reaction not just from your target audience but also yourself.

Playtesting with your client, team and company, is the most critical part of game development. You want to guide your team to the minimum elements needed for an in game playtest, where team members, your clients, your community can be invited in to play the game and provide rounds of feedback. We did 10-15 individual playtest sessions with balancing at each session until we landed on a final design. Sometimes the game got worse from playtest to playtest, but having clear experimentation variables and timely feedback helped our designers course correct to find the right balance of playability, weapon strength, health, level design ect We included our client early in the process so they felt included in the final product.

In the gaming industry 2 things matter: - knowledge/experience - networking. So once you want to stay relevant you need to take care of both topics. Knowledge and experience you can get by: - playing a lot of games, understanding why some of them are fun - going deep into specific, specialist area (i.e focusing on game design) - and then being up to date at least at general level with other areas (ie. focusing on game design on specialist level although then still having general understanding how marketing, technology, financing etc. works in that industry). Networking part you can develop by meeting many people at conferences, "digital coffees" (in both cases sharing knowledge and experience).

Staying relevant means you don't copy and paste the same thing over and over again. It means you don't just strive to be the "big" "AAA" game just from a revenue perspective, but want to get people interested by caring about who is out there. It means not only getting the same people who are already playing games to play but inviting those who might not feel like they belong because they play something that's not the norm. The market is changing because the consumer is changing. The consumer is changing because conditions around them change. To stay relevant you need to take a look at what opportunities, people, places, themes, and stories get overlooked because they're not the norm and how to bring them into the journey.

While updated software and novel techniques are crucial, mastering the art of sifting through industry information is even more critical. Adapting doesn't necessarily mean changing what you do and the work you do as a developer. It does mean that you need to be able to read the industry evolving around you though, and be able to isolate ways to get to where you want to be. New software, working practices and techniques are incredibly valuable - but learning to be an editor of information inside the constant movement of the games industry will allow you to navigate to your next development without becoming overwhelmed.

That's for sure! Our club has faced many different challenges, including a period of strict quarantine due to COVID-19 and the era of online tournaments, as well as the war in Ukraine. The ability to adapt and be flexible allows you not to be caught off guard even in the most stressful and seemingly hopeless situations. It can also be said that in Esports there are no one-size-fits-all rules. Every game developer, every tournament operator, every studio and team has its own working methods, rules, and prohibitions. What is permitted in one discipline is absolutely prohibited in another. Therefore, it is very important to be prepared for sudden changes.

In general you have 2 main ways to approach building good games: - something people know already, for the audience that known - just a little bit better (ie. RPG game using mechanics from that genre, focusing on core male audience - majority of RPG players is in that group - adding just small twists) - something new, using inspirations from other genres, for the audience that was not touched before (ie. Empires & Puzzles was the first RPG game that created a lot experiences thinking about female audience). From my experience: - first one is easier, safer, although is not likely to create the hit game - second one is much more risky, although is more likely, in case of success, to bring hundreds of millions of dollars.

Play everything you can get your hands on. Playing lower-rated games is equally as important as playing the hits. You'd be amazed at what you can learn from what some people may consider a “bad” game. I'd go as far to say that learning why a game “bombed” can be more valuable that why something is a “hit” in many cases.

One word. Play. Play popular games to better know what people want and enjoy. Play just for fun. If you stop playing, you won't be a game designer anymore.

If you're not finding joy in your current pursuits, it might be an indication that you're not in the right place. While working in the game industry isn't always as straightforward or carefree as outsiders might believe, it tends to be more gratifying compared to other fields. I must confess, it has a certain addictive quality. Once you're immersed in the game business, other occupations can seem remarkably mundane by comparison.

If I may add? I've been in it for longer than some people have been alive. I alpha-tested, beta tested 3DSMax. Was using Wavefront, and Alias PowerAnimator when they were on SGI machines. Headed up the transition from them to PC's. A friend of mine? Andrey Zmievski and I came up with blendshapes and morph targets. I wrote the Surface Modeling chapter for Inside 3DS Max 2. Just, don't let it go to your head. I have 15 AAA titles under my belt. Recent personal developments have kinda geared me away from it for awhile. I was a senior vehicle artist at Turn10, twice. Games and sports are very similar: a game is a physical or mental activity or contest that has rules and that people do for pleasure. A sport is a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other. The difference is subtle Gaming is a misnomer, actually, Sporting should also be part of the term. and you should be aware of the differences. Some of the very innovative niches have been created by understanding these terms. Take for example Gears of War Gears of War introduced two revolutionary changes - ducking(game) and reloading(sport). Looking back they were simple but huge advancements in the Shooting Games.

Main piece of advice? The software is made to be customizable. Make it your own, like a musical instrument, then you can play it like one. I have my own subset of those, but, first things first. ZBrush, for example, they just have this broad toolset, of everything in the toolset all just splayed out. Narrow it down. Maya and Max, Same thing. Photoshop, custom ABR sets? "Right tool for the right job. This, is fundamental. You're not digging for the right tool. It's at your fingertips. When you can reduce the minutes to seconds? That adds up to hours, which adds up to days. Get that down, fast, and... many things become easier.

One of the best ways to "stay relevant" in the industry is simply to play more games. And I don't just mean starting your 12th playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3 - play more games, more TYPES of games, outside your typical sphere of knowledge and interest. This industry is constantly evolving, and there is so much incredible creativity and innovation happening every day that you'll miss if you only focus on the heavy hitters. Having a broader experience not only helps you stay up on evolving trends and gameplay, it helps you create and innovate more, and prevents you from getting stuck in a rut or missing the forest for the trees, and grows your understanding of what the market and players look like.
