How do you stay relevant in data analysis?

LinkedIn plays a pivotal role in learning within the data ecosystem through its expansive professional network. Learning is a necessity in data analytics. Set aside some time to learn new skills, whether it's through online courses, tutorials, books, or attending workshops and webinars. Embrace this mindset because it is essential to remain relevant and succeed in your career.

Keep close contact with the day-to-day tooling, it can be through personal projects or some not-urgent demand. Personally, I take 10% of my time (around 20 hours a month) to develop a project where I have to go from coding to implementing. It can be a small experiment or a curiosity analysis, But it helps me to keep fresh, learn what my team is doing and as a bonus I can get in first hand what are the pain points they're feeling during the analytical process.

Use ChatGPT, a lot. And GitHub Copilot if your boss let you use it on a company tab. I found it way more productive and faster this way. Write down your thoughts for given tasks in step-by-step prompts for ChatGPT to convert them into Python. Or SQL. Or whatever... If the GPT codes are not familiar to you but working, keep asking why until you understand the logic. You are learning it on the job which I think is more effective in acquiring new skills. If the code AI suggests is not working, it is still a good idea to keep asking back why but you might need some luck getting the right answers. But then you can always go back to the old and slow but reliable ways of learning things - from books, documentation, YouTube tutorials, etc.

Staying relevant in data analysis involves continuously learning and adapting to new methodologies, software, tools and industry trends. This includes participating in training programs, attending conferences and workshops, working with others, and staying updated on the latest methods and techniques in data analysis.

I love creating personal projects. Projects allow me to use certain tools where I can practice and learn at the same time. Make sure to go into each project with a clear direction so you can retain any information you learn.

Don’t buy Udemy courses and end up in a situation where you jump from one tutorial to another one. Do a quick search on YouTube and you’ll find plenty of useful tutorials. Don’t just sit and watch it, nothing will get into your head. It will be just like every other TikTok scroll you do on daily basis. Instead, either get your dataset or find one in Kaggle and practice those tutorial concepts with your own dataset.

If you don't use it, you lose it." That's something I always keep in mind. I like doing fun, little projects to keep my skills sharp. I've always believed in the power of fun, small projects to hone my skills. For instance, I once coded a drinking card game in Python just for kicks. Not only did it challenge me, but it was also a blast to share and play with friends. We still bring it out at gatherings now and then! Such projects, even if they seem silly or unrelated, can be invaluable. They keep your skills sharp, especially if you're still stepping into the world of real projects. Embrace the fun side of learning; it's more impactful than you might think.

Constantly remind yourself of the purpose of data and analysis: Simply put: To find gaps and opportunities that can be translated into actionable insights identify opportunities for growth ( revenue ) or operational efficiencies ( costs ). Hate to be so terse, but those are the reasons that analytics exist …

The tools are constantly evolving, changing, and improving which requires our community to as well. We are in a state of continuous change while essentially performing the same functions. The change is good, efficient, and also requires us to constantly requires us to learn new skills. This is positive overall . . . however, being in a state of constant change across a very large population is overwhelming. I use two approaches to keep this contained: I remain current with pre-selected industry leading tools, and then just a few that I happen to really like. I create projects, workbooks and other tools to use for budget tracking or my son's school. I love working on them, it helps me implement and retain the new skills that I learned.

Networking with other data analysts is the main reason why I am where I am today. Learning different insights and understanding people's mindsets have helped me create my own vision. Not everyone will agree on something. Being able to keep an open mind will allow you to learn some necessary parts to become an amazing data analyst.

Every connection you make can lead to another, creating a ripple effect. Today's casual conversation at a meetup could lead to tomorrow's collaborative project, mentorship opportunity, or even a new job offer. The data community is vast and varied. From statisticians to machine learning experts, from business analysts to data visualizers - networking introduces you to this rich tapestry of professionals. Each brings a unique skill set and perspective, adding depth to your understanding.

Networking can also help develop soft skills. Coupled with concise communication skills, social skills can set you apart from the pack and lead to more advancement opportunities. People hire the people they will enjoy spending time with on a daily basis. If you regularly network with other DAs, they will remember you when a position opens up.

In the last 6 months alone, I learned so much from just networking with other data analysts within my organization and outside of it as well. My learnings include understanding the tools they use to clean the raw data like Alteryx and Datameer and the business logic behind transitioning projects from SAS platform which is a licensed version to open source platforms like Python thereby reducing costs. It even opened doors for me to part of a Tableau User Group and many other collaborative projects.

On LinkedIn, I find immense value in tapping into my professional network within the data ecosystem to seek feedback. Whether I'm posting updates, sharing my latest projects, or reaching out for advice, the platform becomes a dynamic space where I can leverage the collective knowledge of my connections. The interactive nature of LinkedIn fosters constructive discussions, allowing me to receive real-time feedback on my work, ideas, or queries. Engaging with my diverse network provides valuable insights that help me refine my skills, make informed decisions, and stay relevant in the constantly evolving data landscape.

When you finish an analysis never be afraid to reach out for feedback, especially for recurring projects. As learning in the field of data analysis is continuous, taking a look back at past problems must be as well. Get excited by that process of returning to a project; knowing how to overcome past hurdles faster is a simple way to appreciate your growth.

Solicit feedback from colleagues or mentors to identify areas for improvement and refine your analytical abilities. - I Share my Excel workbooks and Power BI reports with my mentors to receive feedback on my analysis techniques and visualizations. Incorporate suggestions for improvement to refine my skills.

Asking for feedback is definitely a great way to improve because we can know our audiences and their perspectives. Different audiences care about different things, such as your clients might care about the quality and efficiency, your supervisor might care about your KPI, your data accuracy, you data quality control, but the CEO may only want to see how much revenue and cost. Therefore, in order to stay relevant with data analysis, you have to receive feedback from different group of people, so you can improve your future projects with a more considerate approach. By getting feedback, you can also know the most recent trends or concerns that the public care, which gives you new and better focus too in the new projects.

1 - Keep your business case refresh and align with stakeholders: Once very successful data analytics may become outdated or irrelevant over the period if not updated with new business rules, new systems/processes/locations, align with changes in organization objectives or management strategies. 2 - Learn to solve problem: More than learning new skills, it is imperative to solve given problem. for this, one should do whatever it needed like learning new skill, hire more technical resource, take advice from industry expert. 3 - Keep guessing changes in trends: as it is said that change is the only constant in the life. keep eye on mega industry trend, seek feedback from own business or outside industry.

As a data analyst, I stay relevant in this field by continuously taking courses, utilizing all I'm learning in my role and also teaching others what I've learned. With this, I'm well informed, retaining new information and performing better at my job.

Hone those strategic thinking and communication skills. You always want to be able to derive actionable next steps from data — the “so what.” That insight then becomes valuable when you can share it with other people in a clear way and influence how they think. Running the numbers is hard and requires a great amount of skill to do right, but it’s table stakes. Without the so what and the communication of ideas, the data analysis gets ignored. But if you get the so what and the communication right, now you’re on your way to making an impact.

Explore interdisciplinary connections, such as learning about domain-specific knowledge relevant to your data analysis work, and consider pursuing certifications or advanced degrees to deepen your expertise. Additionally, prioritize building strong communication and storytelling skills to effectively convey insights derived from data analysis to stakeholders.
