In addition to setting expectations, let them know the importance of their feedback. Feedback surveys are so common that many participants feel it’s just a part of the course. However letting them know how the feedback will be used and the importance of their comments usually helps participants understand the need not just the want of the information.

2 Choose the right method

Depending on the size, nature, and culture of your team, there are various methods to collect feedback. Surveys or questionnaires, for example, are easy to create and distribute online. These allow you to gather quantitative and qualitative data with tools like Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or Typeform. Interviews or focus groups are more interactive and personal ways to get feedback. You can conduct these either in person or online using tools like Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet. Additionally, feedback cards or boards are simple and creative ways to get feedback. You can use cards or boards with different colors or symbols to represent different aspects of the activity. Ask your team to write or draw their feedback on the cards or boards, then collect them or stick them on a wall or a board.

Eine witzige und schnelle Art ist z.B. die Emoji Feedback Technik. Dabei teilen am Schluss alle teilnehmenden 1-3 Emojis die für sie bezeichnend für die Session waren. Jede Person erz?hlt ihr kurz, weshalb sie die Emojis ausgew?hlt hat. Die Technik funktioniert besonders gut im digitalen Raum. L?sst sich aber auch vor Ort, z.B. durch Zeichnen der Emojis, durchführen.

One thing I found helpful is to create time for people to answer the survey in the moment. By carving out even two minutes at the end of a session dramatically increases the completion rate and gets comments while they are still fresh.

3 Ask the right questions

The quality of your feedback is largely dependent on the quality of your questions. It is important to ask questions that are clear, specific, and relevant to the activity and its goals. Additionally, open-ended questions should be used instead of yes/no questions to receive more detailed and nuanced answers. Examples of good questions include: What was the most enjoyable part of the activity? What was the most difficult part? How did the activity help you connect with your team members? How can we improve the activity for next time? How do you feel after the activity?

I also like to answer simple yes no questions. Let’s face it people have things to do. If there are too many questions that require a long written explanation, the odds of participants providing deep insights on each question is slim to none.

4 Analyze and act on the feedback

Once you have collected the feedback, it's time to analyze it and use it to improve your future team building sessions. Utilizing tools like Excel, Google Sheets, or Tableau can help you organize and visualize the data, and detect patterns, trends, and outliers. WordClouds, Textio, or NVivo are also useful for analyzing text and identifying the most common words, phrases, or themes. With this feedback in hand, you can celebrate successes by sharing positive feedback with your team and highlighting best practices. You can also address any issues with the negative feedback and discuss possible solutions with your team. Finally, you can plan the next steps by considering the needs, preferences, and goals of your team when choosing activities that are relevant, engaging, and fun.

Ensure people do not feel like completing the survey is huge lift. If people see over ten questions or questions that require a lot of writing, the odds of getting deep or complete answers is slim to none.
