There is no easy way around the challenge of setting rates. It takes testing and ultimately good communication. You have to know your bottom line, and you need to build in wiggle room for negotiation. Working freelancers best advice is to charge based on project and eliminate itemization and hourly wages. Charging based on project opens the door to negotiation. Start with 3 levels of services; value, moderate, and premium. These 3 levels can have a base starting point and you can add-on the extras to cater to your clients needs. This gives the client control is setting their price and the ability to make it what they need to meet the budget.

You dont receive what you deserve, you receive what you negotiate. Dont let the market define your value. You may be entering a newly formed marketplace, or you may be able to innovate a dated, long standing industry. Let your ethics speak from themselves and negotiate accordingly. If you short change yourself to win a job, you may be frustrated when you revisit this fee after you have added up all the work, or the results later on.
