The biological method and Phycoremediation are not alternatives to the filtration method as the selection criteria are not the size of the particles. However, they can lower the contamination and can be considered as a pretreatment.

Another system that I have considered for filtration instead of sand filtration, or membrane filtration is capacitive deionization. This technology works by attracting like charged contaminants from water (sometimes even soluble salts in the water can be removed by CapDI, based on the voltage used in the system). I believe this system helps operators by reducing the instances of algal blooms in filter media, or the membranes.

You can also pilot. However a pilot can only take you so far. Following the manufacturers media sizing tool is a good start. That said, not all medias are created equal. Write a media pilot testing protocol beforehand, and don’t be afraid to update it as you run multiple pilot runs.

Regular checks by maintenance personnel operating the system is key to a successful evaluation of the performance criteria.
