In case of storing passwords I recommend using the bcrypt algorithm by applying strong and random salt and pepper to generate a one-way hash that is not vulnerable to Rainbow Tables.

Cyber Security experts have one common principle that says 'Security is everyone's job'. We need to be mindful of 'what' we are making accessible and for whom. Managing access controls is the whole gist of standards like ISO-27001. Users being the last unit in the supply chain possess great responsibility. Hence constant reminders should be embedded in the systems for the users to remind them that they might be leaking crucial information.

Always stick with your development framework as much as possible and avoid creating custom components where established alternatives exist. For example, never create your own Object Relational Mapping (ORM) implementation. This could open up your app to the risk of a SQL injection attack, a nightmare possibility. Use established ORM frameworks like Entity Framework and Hibernate. The same goes for front end frameworks. Use React, Angular and Vue, and then use published and proven components in frameworks. Above all, avoid creating your own security components for your app. Use Open Source peer reviewed and actively maintained components. (Unless you are a security expert creating an open source component).
