Back it up locally and to the cloud. If you lose your work (live files) as a designer, it can be detrimental for many reasons. I personally suggest using a NAS like sysnology in conjunction with auto-sync Google Drive or Dropbox. Extra points if you back up the NAS to a second NAS or the cloud so a sync error doesnt wipe you out

I wish securing your work was effective but unfortunately people steal or copy. Laws are different throughout the world and fighting a battle can be much more expensive and time consuming than it's worth. Keep an eye out, but don't let this consume you.
Ensure you add detailed Metadata to your files especially, images, vectors and the like. This will go a long way in securing them.
