As a CEO of an MSP company, I always use this example to educate any business owner on question like ''what is managed hosting'' Imagine your business as a big party and you’re the host. Now, you could handle everything yourself - cooking, serving, cleaning, managing the guest list, and so on. But that would be a lot of work, right? And you might not have the time or expertise to do everything perfectly. That’s where a Managed Service Provider (MSP) comes in. They’re like a professional party planner who takes care of all the details, so you can focus on enjoying the party (or running your business).

In a shared services model, almost all the time: you are responsible for securing the data. It's your data to protect, you define how it will be protected and tested. You need to evaluate your contract with the hosting provider. Clearly identify who is responsible for what in terms of security. It's also important to note what you can and cannot do in the environments. Example: some providers won't let you run vulnerability scans or do pentesting. In the end you need to look at your BIA, data criticality & protection program as well as your third party risk management. Take these requirements apply it to the environment and ensure all areas are adequately covered.

1/1 There is no doubt that security is always a paramount and most prestigious element of any MHP or MSP business deal between a provider and a customer. Principally speaking, why would a customer risk to outsource its services/data/app if there is slight doubt intact with security measures and practices of service provider. In my experience, I sometimes faced customer/decision makers who don't understand the reality of cyber threats and its associated risks BUT keen to outsource because of other aspects of business IT (explained above in question#1 of this article) I start with quote “Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and it boils down to this: In cybersecurity, the more systems we secure, the more secure we all are.”– Jeh Johnson

I personally rate ''high availability'' more over security evaluation of hosting provider. Because prioritizing high availability is a smart approach. It’s like building a robust bridge: first, you ensure it won’t collapse under normal traffic, and then you reinforce it to withstand storms or unexpected events. In HA you need to check 1- Redundancy of resources across multiple servers or data centers. If one fails, the others take over seamlessly. 2- Load Balancing of traffic evenly to prevent overload on any single server. 3- Do they set up automatic failover mechanisms to switch to healthy servers when needed.

It's important that you clearly define expectations. On both sides. Many times managed services are procured and the client assumes "some random scope" to be true. They interpert what a sales person said the wrong way, or don't ask enough questions about "add on ABC." Both sides need to state specifically what they will do and what they won't. As an example a lot of providers will deliver "vulnerability management." In some cases this is running a scan and providing the results. Nothing more. But a client could expect that the vulnerabilities will be patched and remediated by the MSP. That is not always the case. So dig into each capability and service and align on what you want and need.
