Scouting online is a great place to START, but don't stop there... Take what you find and then research the BACK story. What I mean by that is, to simply search things like "the lesser known area of [Tuscany, Rome, etc]..." OR, "Where the locals go in [Paris, Split...]" Next, search on a map app for the area and determine whether or not that area will be front lit in the early morning or late afternoon/early evening to give you best lighting. Finally, look for a different perspective [higher vantage point or from the ground or through an opening in a wall or window. And be sure to look at your viewfinder or initial shots as if you were looking at a printed photo. Have FUN!

Whatever you do, fight the urge to take the "usual" shot, especially in well-known areas. For example, if the well-known location is typically photographed at sunset, find a vantage point that works at sunRISE and take THAT photo. You will definitely stand out.
