How do you reward and recognize the achievements and contributions of event staff in corporate events?

Recognizing event staff, especially our AV heroes behind the scenes, is key. It's not just a pat on the back; it's fuel for their fire! When we shout out their hard work, we're not only boosting their vibe but also cranking up their drive and dedication. This vibe boost isn’t just good feels—it amps up performance, keeps our team tight, and draws in more talent. Plus, it's at the heart of our #fit4events approach, empowering those backstage maestros to keep hitting the high notes. It's about creating a backstage where everyone's pumped to play their part, pushing the whole show to be its best.

We can't have an event without the event staff, and if the company can keep them engaged and motivated, it will affect the event's overall experience.

In my experience, no matter what size the event is, you should always cover parking and a meal for all your people. That includes staff, vendors and contractors. If your event has additional budget, you can then consider bonuses, paid days off after the event and recognition for the hard work in service at the event.

This is where on our events we like to add our own special touch - offering healthy protein-packed snack options, treating the team to a nice lunch out (yes, we pick up the tab!), or making sure they get a meal just as good as what the attendees are munching on. It's about showing appreciation in ways that resonate with them and keep them fueled, both in spirit and in stomach!

Time and Money! Seriously, give people time off to go sleep, rest, and recharge with explicit communication to them NOT to be on email, slack, etc etc. The other thing that is great is $'s. We give gratuities to event staff at hotels and conference venues, so why not give them to your internal team too, so when they are on PTO they can afford to get that 2 hour massage instead of only 1 hour.

Think beyond the cash - sure, bonuses and gift cards are sweet, but there's more to the story. Make sure whatever you're dishing out is fair, nobody's left scratching their heads or feeling left out. Be clear about what's up for grabs and don't drag your feet delivering the goods. Now, for the cherry on top - toss in some perks that don’t hit the wallet. Flexi-hours for those who juggle a million things, upskilling sessions to keep everyone sharp, or maybe a step up the career ladder for those who knock it out of the park. Don’t forget a shoutout for a job well done; sometimes, a little public high-five is all it takes to make someone's day. It’s about mixing it up and keeping it real.

I always liked to do a post event email to the C-Suite outlining specific accomplishments and obstacles that were overcome during the event to showcase your teams commitment and professionalism, especially on the things NO ONE SAW. The only way this gets better is if your executive team is the one who sends it out.

Always make an effort to remember to share the wins and give credit where it's due, maybe even spotlight those standout moments in your company's newsletter. Remember, it’s not just about the big wins; it’s the small victories that often go unnoticed. So, make your praise as specific as their efforts and don’t wait for the season to change before you say "great job." Also, encourage your team to spot and shout out each other's wins. It turns the whole recognition game into a team sport, where everyone's looking out for each other, keeping that feel-good energy bouncing around.

As a conference facilitator and emcee I make sure that I’m fully engaged with the team before, during and after each event I work at. I like to thank them and also the often neglected AV crew in the room at the end of every conference with a full round of appreciation from myself and the audience. Then, a personal thank you, face to face with each one goes a long way!

Get creative by celebrating both the solo acts and the whole band. Maybe your MVP team player gets a spotlight moment, but then you also throw a pizza party for the whole crew's hard work. And don't be afraid to mix the formal with the laid-back – like an official award followed by an informal team hangout. The trick is to keep your eyes on the vibe you want to create and what your team digs. It’s about striking a chord that resonates with their efforts and expectations, ensuring everyone feels seen, valued, and part of the bigger picture.

Ask for feedback directly from the staff. By understanding their preferences, you can tailor recognition efforts to align with what resonates most with them. This not only fosters a sense of appreciation but also demonstrates that the company values and listens to its employees and staff.
