I have always started by asking the client their expectations & outcomes as a result of experiencing the training & most importantly, how they will measure success. Training is not a tick-box exercise, so asking why (purpose & outcomes) & how (success measures) up front helps to inform the what (content). In my experience, it is valuable to measure success a period after the training eg 1 - 3 months, & to offer a reinforcement training to ensure new knowledge & skills are embedded.
In my experience , outcome oriented approach is very important. Beginning with the end in the mind is the first step to designing training modules. To identify the need conducting a skill gap analysis , training need analysis and having discussion with various stakeholders , evaluating the current results vs expected results would be ideal scenarios. A simple tool like google form to conduct the analysis can be big change maker. Another important factor is having a matrix with hypothesis that can be tested to measure the results.

We should also as trainers consider to evaluate our learning styles and that of the end users. Trainers cane at times over do their own learning styles and end up not meeting the styles of the learners. Thus awareness of ones own style is very important step in creating engaging content that is suitable for the learners is vital.

How am I a good trainer? It's simple, I focus on the learning, not the training. It's critical I focus on what the candidates can verbalise, scribe and demonstrate. Of course, contextualised analysis, sound design and delivery is key to this, but the focus has to be on the candidate's learning, not my training. Pedantic, maybe, but to be honest I hate the term training, and I hate the word assessing. Put the two acts together successfully in a carefully established union, and you create the phase that I covet, and that is Competency Assurance. Competency Assurance in itself is a process and journey, but do it right and it keeps people out of the morgue and out of the coroner's court. (I work in an industry where things go BANG!!!)

Always be seeking feedback. Ensure that you're asking the difficult questions of learners and clients; structure your feedback gathering methodology around improving as a trainer, not stroking your own ego.
In my opinion, a feedback should always be either Entirely Positive or Constructive (if Negative) which starts with validating the Key Potentials of your Trainees/Team and then highlighting the difference they could have made against the short-fall. This helps the trainees / team to have a critical thinking approach and explore Self-Awareness..!

Working in L&D requires one to stay ahead of the curve; reading about the latest trends and new methodologies. Will you incorporate them all into your delivery? No, but they will help you to grow as a trainer. Put yourself forward for courses you've identified that will benefit your development; don't wait for someone to come to you and suggest it.
