How do you protect the privacy of your AI clients?

One way to address privacy issues in AI is the use of synthetic data. Synthetic data helps protect privacy by generating artificial data that mimics the characteristics of real data without containing sensitive or personally identifiable information. This allows AI models to be trained and tested without exposing real individuals' data, thereby significantly reducing privacy risks. Additionally, synthetic data enables robust and diverse datasets to be created, which can help in addressing data bias and enhancing the performance of AI systems, all while adhering to stringent privacy constraints.

Third party service providers are increasingly adopting the use of AI as part of their product offerings. This also extends to external consultants & contractors. Organisations will need to form a view as to whether they enable AI functionality on SaaS products already being used, with the anticipation more SaaS providers will eventually have AI functionalities enabled. Furthermore, some products may not allow to opt out of AI based on our subscription.

I prioritize the privacy of my AI clients through rigorous data encryption, proactive security audits, and strict adherence to privacy regulations. Maintaining their trust and confidentiality is my utmost concern.

At least as far as Europe is concerned, the regulations for obtaining consent are based on the GDPR - at least when personal data is involved. We will see what further requirements the EU AI Act will bring. In any case, the draft text of the AI Act and the developments in this regard should already be observed and followed now, since an entry into force in 2026 is probably to be expected.

Such instance can be hosted internally or in the Cloud(s) but need to be secured like any other application and the infrastructure it relies on. Data security and encryption are pivotal for modern connectivity. Encryption safeguards data during transmission, interaction, and storage, enhancing digital trust. This priority defends against cyber threats, ensuring confidentiality and resilience. For instance, encrypted e-commerce payment gateways secure customer financial details, instilling trust by shielding sensitive information from potential breaches.

Just to piggyback off the point on 'access control' a bit further. From my experience as a former IT service desk technician, I find that leveraging a constructive role-based access control (RBAC) security paradigm (i.e., from a user permissioning level), helps to greatly assess the extent of visibility that a user may be able to view from their respective vantage point(s) and resource areas. The RBAC method is a lot less error-prone than manually assigning permissions on a singular basis and ensures that data residing both at rest and/or in transit is shielded from prying eyes that lack the necessary privileges (e.g., read/write/edit, etc).

To protect data at rest and in transit, encryption, authentication, and access control must be used. They must also monitor and audit data activities and transactions, and report any violations or events in a timely and transparent manner. Data security is critical in today's digital world! Data, both at rest and in movable state, requires a strong defense. In addition, a robust backup system functions as your trusted companion, ensuring data availability even during difficult times.

My work with data usually involves using Microsoft BI or SQL. For some analysis, knowing exactly who your client is can be really important, but for the bigger picture, I try to anonymize data even at this step. Working with AI models, I like to use tokenization and data swapping. For me, these are the easiest and cheapest ways to anonymize. If you learn how to do it once, you will be able to do it on every new project. And if we are talking about data minimization, purpose limitation is often the best way for me. With that, you may not need to additionally anonymize the set of data that you have, and you will be able to focus your attention on the important information.

Data minimization help you maintaining data for as long as required to fulfill the specified purpose and prevents unauthorized access to, or disclosure of, personal data that is unnecessary to collect and maintain. When creating an anonymous survey or anything, be careful not to gather too much information or data that, when combined, could directly or indirectly identify and jeopardize the privacy of any persons. If you do, the poll will no longer be genuinely anonymous.

In an industry dealing with PII data, my approach would be to use mock-up data models that follow real-world patterns. This strategy ensures ethical compliance, secure development, and risk minimization, reflecting a responsible and practical methodology. It’s a tailored solution that aligns with the demands and values of my field.

Data anonymization and minimization, like encryption is a way of securing Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from unauthorised access. Data anonymization involves the deliberate removal of PII from a dataset, thereby making it very difficult to link it to an individual or organisation. E.g. scrambling of a National Identification Number to make it difficult to associate it with an individual, while encryption transforms an entire dataset into an unreadable format understandable only to the person who possesses the right key or password. Data minimization focuses on reducing data breaches by reducing the volume of data collected, stored and processed by an organisation, which also significantly decreases data management costs.

This is not "another way", but when dealing with data subjects in the EU this should be the only approach. The risk of being forced to remove part of your training data in an already completed system is definately there, and especially as a startup when your business continuity will hardly be a factor when weighed against the rights of data subjects under EU law. Large fines and the forced re-training of the AI are definate possibilities.

You should not even attempt to run an AI platform, or any other kind of business, if you are not aware of the laws and reulations governing personal data specifically and data in general. Where mandated by law like in the EU and India you need to follow the guidelines to the letter. And either get certified or at least get acquinted with the basic controls of ISO27001 and ISO27002 for it, data and information security and ISO/IEC 23894 for the AI controls.

Staying vigilant about continuous monitoring and audits of your data governance framework is also crucial. Regular assessments ensure that the established processes are effective and aligned with evolving regulations. This proactive approach enables prompt adjustments and improvements to maintain the highest standards of privacy protection in your AI projects.

Data governance and accountability are core to effective data management. By defining roles and protocols, organizations ensure accurate, secure, and compliant data handling. For example, a healthcare provider designates data stewards to oversee patient records, ensuring privacy regulations are upheld. This approach fosters trust, minimizes risks, and enhances data-driven decision-making.

Keep an eye on your data governance framework's continual monitoring and auditing as well. Regular assessments guarantee that established procedures are efficient and compliant with changing legal requirements. With this proactive strategy, it is possible to preserve the highest privacy requirements in your AI projects while making timely adjustments and enhancements.

The ethical use and management of data within and outside an organisation is the primary concern of data governance and accountability. The basis for these concepts are the prioritisations of data control and data quality. This is key because there must be iterative frameworks in place to guarantee that data is well-documented, easy to track by persons with access and kept in a manner that is secure, compliant and confidential. Another key metric of good data governance and accountability practice is the number of passed data audits carried out within an organisation. This is very important considering the very volatile nature of data and its real time sourcing which may transform available information on it significantly.

Client data privacy is the fiduciary responsibility of any serious minded organisation as any information is shared by clients is a matter of confidentiality and trust. As a mark of professional respect, deploy appropriate technology to protect the data of client as is. Ensure that your staff undergo constant training to educate and update their awareness as to how to properly handle client and company communications and information Develop a robust privacy policy that is easily accessible and understandable to your clients in which case they can elect to share or not to share their sensitive information for the purposes you might require. Be candid on how customer data will be used. Honesty remains the best policy in these matters.

Client data privacy is critical. If this is not handled appropriately then you run the risk of the client getting bad PR, sued and them rightly suing you. Guard client data as if it were your most precious asset - it is! Only use the data you need and no more. Ensure that you have the appropriate consents to use it. Anonymise and minimise what you need to protect any identifying personal information whilst maintaining its accuracy and utility. Ensure you have a data governance policy in place and check that it is being followed correctly at all times i.e., trust but verify. If you are moving data then encryption in transit and at rest are key, and ensure it is only accessible to those who need it. Be accountable at all times.
