My number one tip for cover letters is to include a "Because this, then that" paragraph; "Because I solved this problem, I can solve the problem you are grappling with" ... This is especially important if you are executing a career shift or making a convincing argument for a move into the C-Suite. You only have a small space to make yourself stand out, so don't waste it repeating your resume or even referring to it. This is a stand-alone document, treat it as such. Express enthusiasm and interest, and position yourself squarely as the solution they've been seeking.

Find a friend or family member whose writing and judgment you trust. In addition to catching typos you can no longer see, they can flag areas of your resume that don't make sense to an outside observer.
