1 Process parameters

For example, the clamping force should be high enough to prevent flash and defects, but not too high to cause excessive wear and stress on the mold and machine. Additionally, the injection speed should be fast enough to fill the cavity before the plastic cools and solidifies, but not too fast to cause shear stress and turbulence on the plastic. Moreover, the injection pressure should be high enough to overcome the resistance of the mold and the plastic viscosity, but not too high to cause overpacking and shrinkage. Lastly, the cooling time should be long enough to ensure dimensional stability and quality, yet not too long to reduce the cycle time and productivity.

Injection parameters can also be broken down into two categories; Firstly the "Dry Cycle" this consist of mold open, mold close, ejection time and part removal time (EOAT). Secondly the "Wet Cycle" this consist of the injection time, speed, pressure and transfer position as well as cooling time, recovery time, back pressure, barrel and mold temperatures. Anything related to the quality of the molded product. The Dry Cycle is the easiest way for cycle time reductions and mostly doesn't require product verification. The wet cycle portion, to make changes one should start with cooling time and perform a gate freeze analysis for optimal cooling time. Recovery should be with in the last few seconds of the cooling time window to halt degradation.

I attended a talk by Suhas at NPE 2024 and I very much appreciated his simplification of running limited scale DOE's to provide your processing technicians with a molding parameter window and ALSO a troubleshooting guide. Melt temp (or mold temp for semicrystallines) + pack pressure 2x2 DOE's can tell you a LOT and adding hold time in and measuring part dimensions as a response can be simple, fast, and beneficial for keeping everyone on the same page.

Proper material handling and preperation should also be considered a top priority. Alwyas consult the technical data sheet for insoghts into processing variables unique to the chosen material. Ensure that drying parameters are followed and monitored closely along with measurement of the actual moisture content before processing.
