How do you plan and scope your CRM integration testing?

Here's the framework we use in every CRM integration project we do: - Define your goals, and this means talking to lot's of stakeholders for internal goals & then focusing outward on the impact on the audience/customer - what are the goals of getting data from here to there - Write out your requirements and split into: MUST have NICE to have - Start mapping out some real life use cases - you need to always link it back to what you're doing now or it won't work - Come up with a testing strategy and ensure you have a UAT environment - Create your data infrastructure map, data field mapping doc and data flow procedures - TEST, TEST, TEST - Manage defects & fix - GO LIVE

Start with your goals, what is the integration achieving? Then create a data mapping document and identify the type of data flow, is it one way, two way? Once you've identified what data needs to go where and to what data fields you can begin planning your integration. Depending on the type integration you'll need mode vigorous testing. To be safe if you can always test integrations in a UAT environment. If you can't ensure your triggers exclude your current data and only pull through test data. Integrations won't be perfect, but you need to test and ensure data's mapped to the right fields, your triggers work and try different use cases.

This starts with a deep client discovery session and building a map of the current systems in the business and what they are used for to understand what needs to be completed in order for the client to deem the project successful. I map all integrations and map the data that needs to be transferred. I then build the pilot for testing an create a short video of the functionality between integration points. I do this 1 integration at a time. Your order of integration should be defined by the logical flow of data. Start with the initial point of data collection and work up the through the process integrating 1 system at a time and rechecking all previous integrations before proceeding onto the next. Make sure you have a roadmap, no guessing.

I personally like to test each integration in isolation and then perform regression tests until the system is completed for a full end to end test. The dynamic nature of all platforms constant changes and what works well in the quarantined environment of the development office, may not work in the live client environment. So in my opinion there needs to be full suite of tests performed in prototype mode and then a second full test when in live production.

I am a huge fan of hybrid testing. I test each step as I go manually then I also do a complete automation test as if I were a new user / contact into the system.
