How do you perform an OTDR test on a fiber optic cable?

OTDR is used to test optical fiber link. How? ? at first place identifying the type of fiber link you are going to test i.e. metro link or long distance to ? knowing the wave length depending the type of link. For metro connection use 1310nm, for long distance use 1550 & 1625 ? OTDR helps to identify where the loss by graph (dead zone or loss)

Pulse width should be adjusted to the location(distance) and resolution of interest, not the attenuation of the cable, whatever that is. The range only needs to cover the length of the cable if that is what you are interested in. It would probably be better to say (in this scenario) that in the initial shot you should set range to cover the entire expected fiber path. The resolution is the pulse width but distance should be factored in. Averaging time should be renamed to test duration. Generally, longer is better but 20s is the norm.

An OTDR shot can indicate a problem with a cable like a sheath-cut/bend, but it can only really tell you about the fiber path you are shooting, one of many over potentially many cables. Most problems in the field occur at splice cases as this is where the fiber is handled and mistakes made. Industry standard is KM, not FT. iOLM and bi-directional overlay are not acceptable for troubleshooting or for FLR documentation. How to test fiber and what equipment to test with depends on the fiber and the application. If it's multimode a Ruby Red tester (as we used to call it) will suffice and it's a less expensive piece of test equipment. One thing I have found helpful is to have a variety of connector configurations when out testing as well as a bare fiber adapter. Enterprise networks will require some bare fiber testing in the field to identify where the proposed fibers are going, these results don't always need to be saved. The bare fiber adapter allows you to conduct the verification without splicing the fibers which saves time and money. This method can also be used for reel testing before cables are installed in the field.
