In my experience, not only is the resulting point cloud "cool," it's incredibly useful and MUCH more accurate than you could get with photos or hand measurements. Using a point cloud, a BIM manager can have a much better time creating CAD or Revit files and not worry about second guessing measurements taken on site.

The hardware and network required to process, share, and store the scan data should be emphasized. Raw scan files are several hundred MB to over a GB each. A very small project with 20 scans can easily generate 50 GB of data. A typical project is closer to 200 scans. Processing scans required higher end computers, sharing the point cloud requires a high speed network, and storing numerous projects required TB's of space.
