How do you organize your library collections for optimal access?

The biggest problem with the major classification systems is that they were created by white western men in the 1800s and are thus limited in scope and view. (In Dewey, 200s are religion but Christianity uses 200 to 289.999 leaving 299 to 299.999 for every other religion in the world!). Then there's how to deal with books that cover multiple topics. Classification is mainly a location system. Using drones to find the RFID tag, books could be left anywhere as is done in Amazon warehouses. But this would lose the serendipity of gathering books of a simliar topic together. Linked data and RDF will help, once more library systems integrate it.

Creating an already filtered search area for items that are just streaming videos may help patrons find their information more efficiently.

What should really drive how you label & shelve is how your patrons use the collection. This was why we decided to genrefy the teen collections at my library--the majority of teens were coming in looking for a genre, rather than a specific title or author. I was constantly hearing 'Where are the romance books?' or 'I'm looking for scary books,' so it only made sense to add color-coded labels and shelve the items by genre! Now teens can browse for what they want, and books are flying off the shelves much faster. Think about who your users are, how they interact with the collection, and what will make the collection more navigable for them--and let THAT be your driving force behind your labeling & shelving decisions.

I work in a high school library. When I became the library-media teacher, the library collection was already set up by genre. However, I noticed my students were having difficulty finding research materials. Therefore, I put the nonfiction books back on the Dewey Decimal classification system and then color coded the fiction. My students like this new set up.

Signage can make or break user experience! It's the patron's first line of guidance when stepping foot into the library. While we often like to joke that people don't read signs, we sometimes don't take into consideration whether our signs are user friendly. Confusing placement, unclear directions, & even color contrast can steer a user wrong while leaving them frustrated. Take into account your library's space & continually audit existing signs to ensure that they are effective while also being accessible. Keeping a consistent design also "brands" your signage, inducing familiarity with your patrons.

As librarians, we have a duty to ensure that our collections reflect our community's needs. Keeping current with trendy titles is only one piece of collection evaluation. Weed titles that are uncirculated or outdated, keep track of patron requests & needs, & use various methods of evaluation when considering new items. A library collection should be balanced, reflect a wide range of diversity, & should be periodically examined for their general condition.

Handouts are an excellent tool that can be used to help library users locate specific collections. Simplify what library users need to know onto a single page so they may locate those specific collections properly. If it makes the explanation easier for the reader, feel free to include a graphic organizer within the handout. Using colored paper is an excellent way to make the handouts stand out. Be sure to put the handouts at the front desk as well as other locations that may be pertinent.

One of the most important things to consider is the age and knowledge level of your patrons. The organization of a library for elementary students will likely be much different than that of an academic library. While there are many different options to explore when arranging and organizing your space, finding ways to ensure your patrons are successful in locating materials should be the top focus.

When in doubt, apply what Sesame Street taught us: "One of these things is not like the others..." Put all your reference material along one wall or in a designated reading room/area especially for assets that cannot be checked out. Don't be afraid to move things around (with permission). If it doesn't work, make an arrangement that does. That's why weeding helps so much; I remember the day that the Huntington Beach Public Library got rid of ALL the cassette audiobooks (remember those??) from the Media Center. So much space opened up.
