How do you optimize your putaway process to reduce travel time and congestion?

It's both simple and complicated, have you optimized the A, B, C movers both in position and travel path in the warehouse? How often are you updating their velocity? Not only through picking, but putaway as well.

Additionally, there are other zones to consider also either for current use or any future expansions. Cool rooms, refrigerated products, and of course, hazardous materials, all should be placed where in the worst case senerio, you have your segregation of those 3 areas planned on your layout for normal business and in case of any unforeseeable emergencies. Cool rooms farther away from bay doors or staging areas, should always be considered, and of course, any hazmat materials should have the least traffic access location, and actually should be one of the first areas to look to prep for storage separation, in the least warehouse traffic zones if possible, but accessible for any emergency responses.

Receiving automation should include any relabeling requirements along with directed putaway to the proper zone, which may include a different sprinkler density. You may find it's not been completed, or everyone assumed it was someone else's responsibility. It can be a massive project if the warehouse is full, or the sprinklers were not set up correctly. Never assume the architect/Project Manager/Safety Manager covered it. Make the responsible Manager or Director prove to you it was covered correctly with the math and the products. You might find it was missed. Are you using a 3PL, then have you had then cover Hazardous Material in their bid package? Above all else, make sure you know!

I think one of the most important things that’s helped my team is LISTENING to what our hourly team members have to say. The “do-ers” of the job encounter scenarios every day that leaders might not always be aware of. Communication is key, but leaders are in place to eliminate obstacles that stand in our team members path, and we do that by listening.

Have your Receiving and Inventory managers test a few incoming products every month, and report the accuracy of the process. They may say they are doing it, but a real life report gives you the data you need to show it's effectiveness. Plan, Execute, Report, Validate

As part of the new product launch, make sure Distribution Operations is on the sign off command line. One for the size/weight/storage unit/pick unit/pack unit of the product; Two is velocity data and putaway path are verified correct in the automation; Three is any overpack requirement/Hazardous material considerations? They should be included in the cost structure per unit as well as the floor space/materials/sprinkler requirements. I actually found a couple of product launches that would be a loss per unit when packaging requirements were added to the product that we were able to address and fix upstream.
