1 IPv6 Addressing Basics

Before diving into route summarization, you need to understand some basics of IPv6 addressing. IPv6 addresses are 128 bits long, divided into eight 16-bit segments separated by colons. Each segment can be written in hexadecimal notation, and leading zeros can be omitted. For example, 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:ff00:0042:8329 can be shortened to 2001:db8::ff00:42:8329. IPv6 addresses can be classified into three types: unicast, multicast, and anycast. Unicast addresses identify a single interface, multicast addresses identify a group of interfaces, and anycast addresses identify the closest interface from a group of interfaces.

2001:db8:4000::/48

You can summarize them into one route with the prefix 2001:db8::/32, which is the longest common prefix among the four routes. The /32 indicates the number of bits that are fixed in the prefix, and the remaining bits can vary. The summarized route is more compact and easier to advertise to other routers.

A good practice for address allocation and assignment is to use the global routing prefix (the first 48 bits of an IPv6 address) to identify the network, the subnet ID (the next 16 bits) to identify the subnetwork, and the interface ID (the last 64 bits) to identify the interface. This way, you can easily summarize routes based on the global routing prefix or the subnet ID, depending on the level of aggregation you want. Furthermore, a hierarchical and consistent design should be implemented to allow for easy and efficient summarization. Additionally, a routing protocol should be configured that supports route summarization as well as avoiding conflicts or inconsistencies with other routers or networks.
