How do you optimize the performance and speed of regression testing with selenium?

Selecting the perfect framework depends on your project's needs, programming language, and personal preferences. 1. JUnit:Java-based: Ideal for projects already using Java. 2. TestNG:Java-based: Another popular choice for Java projects and More flexibility than JUnit 3. PyTest:Python-based- A popular choice for Python projects. Simple and elegant syntax: Focuses on readability and maintainability of test code. 4. Cucumber:Language-agnostic: Utilizes Gherkin language to define test steps, readable by both technical and non-technical teams. Improved collaboration: Promotes communication and understanding between testers and developers. Requires additional tools like Selenium to execute test steps.

JUnit, TestNG and Cucumber are the most widespread test frameworks. Unit tests leading them. But they have to use their needs. For example you want to test fast and your project is a little bit small, and maybe you can choose JUnit. But TestNG is used for more complex and paralel tests. By the way, Cucumber used for non-technical people, I mean they will understand.

Page Object model is an object design pattern in Selenium. Webpages are represented as classes, and elements on the page are defined as variables on the class, so user interactions can then be implemented as methods on the class. The Page Object Model (POM) is a design pattern widely used in test automation to enhance automated test scripts' maintainability, scalability, and reusability.

I'm a strong advocate of Page Object Model, and I've always used this model in majority of my projects. In my previous write-up, I adopted the Page object model for that project, recently a change was made at the backend, it was easy for me to quickly know where to make adjustments in my code, this is a testament to modularity of the Page object model

Locaters is used for transition to elements on the peoject. Selenium has 8 basic locators; ID, Name, class, XPath, CssSelectors, LinkText, PartialLinkText, and TagName. The most fast one is CSS but ID is recommended according experts. Wait is used for if internet connection is poor or system has stucking and is late due any reason. Thread.sleep() is used widely

Personnellement, pour localiser les éléments de la page j'opte pour les localisateurs les plus spécifiques et les moins susceptibles de changer. Par exemple, utilisez des ID( parce qu'ils sont uniques), des classes CSS spécifiques ou des chemins d'accès xpath court et précis. Concernant les attentes, j'essaie d'éviter les temps d'attente excessifs qui peuvent ralentir les tests.

When it comes to locators, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Using direct locators is more reliable than parent or sibling elements. I don't like the assumption that elements will stay in the same place or move as a group with a parent or sibling if the DOM gets overhauled. Two approaches that can minimize the chances of brittle locators are writing semantic HTML and adding unique attributes with explicit values to elements making them unambiguous. This also encourages collaboration between the QA and UI teams bringing their expertise together to optimize locators and minimize future overhead of maintaining flimsy tests.

Explicit waits allow you to specify a condition and a maximum time to wait for it. Use efficient locators Choose the most specific and stable locator possible to avoid ambiguity, redundancy, or fragility. For example, ID locators are generally considered the fastest and most reliable because ID attributes are supposed to be unique on a web page. You can also choose other locator strategies based on the application's HTML structure and the stability of element attributes, such as class, name, or CSS selector. Avoid overusing XPath locators, as they can be slower than other methods. Combine implicit and explicit waits You can combine implicit and explicit waits to optimize your wait strategies based on different scenarios.

When it comes to locators, I highly recommend using SelectorsHub to generate the most reliable locator for each element. For elements that appear multiple times on a page, I prefer to use relative XPath locators to ensure accuracy. In terms of waits, they are essential for handling scenarios where elements might not load immediately, often due to network latency. As a QA professional, it’s important to identify sections of your application where delays are likely and strategically apply waits to ensure smooth test execution.

Parallel testing and distributed testing are two techniques that can reduce the execution time of selenium tests by running multiple tests at once. Parallel testing runs multiple tests on the same machine using threads or processes, while distributed testing uses a remote server or cloud service to run multiple tests on different machines. Both techniques require configuration and coordination, but offer advantages such as faster feedback and shorter delivery cycles, higher test coverage and reliability, lower infrastructure and maintenance costs, and better scalability and flexibility.
